WANTED: Mouse Ear's Hosta's
Comments (5)Are you interested in Hosta nakaiana? I have mine next to my driveway (sunny) and the leaves are about the size of my thumb. I'm looking for other mini's Thanks, Adel...See MoreAnother sunny thread + my long list of what I have to plant
Comments (3)I have Popcorn, montana Aureomarginata, Blue Angel, Climax, and Dawn's Early Light growing in similar light. I was just at at a nursery and saw Diana Remembered in afternoon sun and it was burnt up -- very ugly! I've had Cheatin Heart and Invincible in full sun all day for two years with no problems. Ripple Effect and Ann Kulpa sat on my deck in hot sun for two weeks. Ripple Effect was fine, but the white on Ann Kulpa melted. I'm sure part of Ann Kulpa's problem was that it was root-bound in the pot....See MoreIs this really "Giantland Sunny Mouse Ears?"
Comments (16)Irawon, I waited to answer until I could check them together. Mouse Cheese is somewhat thinner than Mouse Ears, which makes sense because it's a seedling instead of a sport like all the other mice. I got lucky and found a comparatively huge plant at Emerald Forest. At 6 inches it already surpasses the registered height, plus the leaves are 5 inches long and 3.25 inches wide. So it's definitely larger than the other mice I've seen....See MoreBlue Mouse Ears
Comments (19)I agree Windymess, that is its growth habit. Nicholsworth, once it develops more feeder roots, more of those lateral and surface roots there will be more dirt to adhere to and bind it more closely to its growing locale. This growing season should provide that. Another suggestion would be to grow it in water to develop more roots faster (which I have done) but not everyone is comfortable with this process (as per previous discussions on this topic). I think your tiny Mouse will be just fine once you replant it and grow into a fine little hosta for you. Due to its current size it also wouldn't hurt to grow it in a small/tiny pot not much bigger than itself for a couple of months where you can monitor it. It will grow faster and develop more roots in the medium as it is a softer, aerated mix than in garden dirt, in my opinion. You could then plant it back in the ground around the usual root-growing time in July/August. There are options...up to you. :-)...See Morenicholsworth Z6 Indianapolis
