Design Dilemma Storage & Closet Bathrooms

is it ok to walk through closet to get to master bath

Our master closet is small and next to it is a long hallway to the master bath. Would it look right to open up the closet ( with an island) to get to the master bath? Since I am remodeling both, would they need to compliment each other?

I think entering the closet thru the master bath would be a more common scenario than entering a closet to get to the bathroom. Could you center your hallway and put longer her/his closets on either side?

I love the idea of having a wic with a door from the Master Bath. In fact as I was drawing the plans for our house (that is currently being built) this was a feature I considered a "must have". DH and I are rarely on the same schedule and I think it will be great! DH is a night owl and I am a morning person. So he can get completely ready for bed without having to disturb me going in and out of the room/bathroom. And in the morning I can get up go into the bathroom and not have to go back into the bedroom except to leave after I am completely ready. I'm really looking forward to this feature of our new house!!

Our master suite is one long rectangle. MBR-Closets-MBA. The entry to the bedroom is at the inside corner of the room. Walk halfway along the short wall and turn right into a hallway which is flanked by closets, each with a pocket door (seldom closed). There is no door at the bedroom end of the hall. There is a door at the bathroom end. A sleeper doesn't hear the partner's 2 a.m. visit to the toilet. No one using a sink, tub or shower is treated to a partner walking through to a closet, accompanied by a draft. Clothing stays free of moisture. Bedroom and bath have at least two walls with windows.

Loving the thoughts, and I’ve been battling so many different ideas here. The master at the back has been intriguing, as the ceiling would be easy to vault above that side, and could open up the space as well. To the previous comments, this house has a basement that I can easily open the basements, so plumbing on the right side would remain a straight through path if I keep it aligned. The laundry room variation is a great thought, although it would make me somewhat uncomfortable as the “kids” bathroom needs to be usable for visitors needing to go... we decided against a kids bathtub, as baths are supervised while they are young, or earlier in the evening as they get older (I really don’t see the point of a bath... but my wife insist on a freestanding one). I’ll have finalized measurements on Monday, and will take these design thoughts back into a new diagram. Your feedback has been awesome!

Need help with master bath/walk in closet combo layout

Hi everyone. Thanks for the comments/questions. I've uploaded a pic with actual current dimensions. The door must remain on the current wall (which leads to bedroom), and we are keeping both windows as previously mentioned. I wont be keeping anything in the below layout other than the windows so I don't believe dimensions of my current bathroom fixtures are required. I cannot extend the bathroom in any way so the space in the diagram is all that we have. The door can be moved left or right as needed. I am open to removing the tub if the layout is much better without it. Ideally I would like to have a tub (64"x33"), steam shower with bench, double vanity and toilet, and a comfortable walk in closet. I am open to having the closet entrance through the bathroom, as a passthrough, or a door into the bedroom (as it currently is). Note that we will be removing the large corner tub and replacing the vanity, shower, etc. with new fixtures.

Why not since it would enable you to have a larger and more functional closet.

The only issue would be that many closets are not particularly attractive - is there any way to create a space so that the contents are for the most part hidden? I wouldn't want to stare at the interior of my closet without doors.

We thought about taking out the walls to the small closet.

Thank you. I think I am going to hire a decorator and possibly take three feet from my office and make a hall with doors to two closets. I appreciate all the advice.

That sounds like a good plan or another idea could be to customize your existing closets with a combination of storage units (we used the Pax system from Ikea) and wire shelving from a home improvement store. We added double rows of hanging storage to double up on available space. I see in your husbands closet that doing that would add more hanging space. The tall storage pieces can be customized with shelves, drawers, even laundry baskets and in your husbands closet could be placed on the short ends. We used the wire shelves to create a tall shoe storage rack as well. We also have bedside stands with drawers as well as a dresser.
