Comments (11)I think that the post above by ken-n.ga.mts is valuable, especially since he admits to using chemicals. I would read the threads linked below carefully to understand that you definitely aren't in California anymore. We in the southeast have learned to absolutely ignore any specific rose recommendations made by those in California because they just don't have the disease pressure we do and therefore their experience is not relevant. This caveat does not however apply to cultural advice about things like mulch, pruning, etc., because these things are more universal. I strongly recommend own root roses, and generally these require mail order. Chamblees Roses and Roses Unlimited are highly regarded source nurseries. Both are near enough geographically to minimize shipping costs and shipping stress. They also have different inventory although a few may be available from both. Chamblees has an organized list of "Earth-Kind" roses on the left side of the home page. But if I were to name just three, I'd say choose two roses by Kordes with "Fairy Tale" in the name and the new hybrid tea rose, 'Francis Meilland.' Once you find the list of avaiable "Fairy Tales," you could return to this forum and search for them by name to read what others have written about them. Just replace "Alabama Blackspot" on the search page linked below with the name of the rose and click "Search." I invite you to do that with 'Francis Meilland' after you read the linked threads. Good luck! And lastly, roses LOVE clay. Congratulations on your location! Here is a link that might be useful: Alabama Blackspot...See MoreFrancis Meilland, Love Song, Veterans Honor
Comments (15)Thank you everyone - I think Francis Meilland wins the day. It truly is a beautiful hybrid tea with that classic look and a wonderful fragrance, and seems to be disease resistant, you can't do better than that. For me it has taken a little patience, but it has been worth it. I think Andrea from Michigan had a bush shot of it last year, that might actually be a better climate for it. Hers was beautiful....See MoreYour favorite non-Kordes/non-Meilland hybrid tea?
Comments (15)without a doubt---LOUISE ESTES. Everything I want in a HT. Good looking bush from top to bottom. Beautiful foliage, long cutting stems, one of the most beautiful blooms I have ever seen and it smells great. I have never seen a picture of this rose that does it any justice. You have to see it in person to understand what I mean. Now it gets tough. #2 would be MOONSTONE---Some good shots on HMF. #3 is BRINESSA---Beautiful smoky pink blooms on a good bush. Foliage like leather. Getting a little tough to find now aday....See MoreBest hybrid tea roses
Comments (22)Sara-Ann and other cold-zoners: Which of the roses that Sarah mentioned below are most winter hardy, and were they own-root, grafted-on-Dr.Huey, or grafted-on-multiflora? thank you. Below are the roses that Sara-Ann (zone 6) mentioned: "Memorial Day, Double Delight, Beverly, Perfume Delight, Tiffany, Francis Meilland, Bewitched, Twilight Zone, Pink Peace, Fragrant Plum, Grande Dame, Buxom Beauty, Big Momma, Melodee Parfumme, Fragrant Plum, Twilight Zone and Melodee Parfumme, Angel Face, Sheila's Perfume and Sunsprite." From StrawChicago: From the above list, Double Delight survives 8 of my zone 5 winters as grafted-on-Dr.Huey, Bewitched died since it was a tiny rooting, own-root Twilight Zone is vigorous & blooms lots after seven zone 5 winters, Angel face died both as own-root and grafted-on-Dr.Huey, Sheila's perfume died as own-root through winter....See Morerosesmi5a
