concrete fill for under garage slab

We will be pouring a slab for the garage floor This area will need to be filled to use as the base form. This is a very large area. Approx $10k of #57 We can also install some piers and then fill with dirt. Still very expensive. Is there anything else that can be used Anything such as expanding foam to fill the void?

Concrete is concrete. A large slab = expensive. A large garage = expensive. I'm seeing some water in the background of the photo which screams out WATER MITIGATION needed for whatever you are building.

You can go 'sturdy' today (which also means expensive) or you can go EXPENSIVE tomorrow (ie. jacking out bad substrate under the garage slab...'cause you wanted to save some $$$).

Never EVER go cheap on the envelope! Ever! The Envelope keeps the walls up, the water out and the ground underneath you level.

If you must take money from somewhere, take it from a gregarious roof line (I'm making an assumption here...it is for illustration purposes only - please bear with me) or from an over-the-top kitchen.

Spend money on your construction, and you will save money at the end of the day. I promise. It is easier to rip out 'builder grade' cabinets in 15 years than it is to jack out a garage slab, stabilize the home with pillars, remove the nasty fill and then pour the concrete again....

If you have a 'multi-peak roof line' then look at shaving off $10k worth of corners. If you must do a 'redesign' for the roof/attic then NOW is the time to do it. You have the forms up for the slab (which is designed to take the MASSIVE weight of a big, expensive roof (again...I'm assuming here...I don't know your build) which means it is OK with taking a LIGHTER LOAD if need be.

I know that's not what you were hoping to hear for a solution...but FOUNDATIONS are not the place to save money. Even if they are in a garage.

It does not look like an excavation, but the slab elevation was always meant to be raised from grade (floodplain elevation?). Then was the fill overlooked? As you seem aware, gravel should be used rather than any type of soil if you want best success in mitigating settling. What is the depth of fill? If deep, I would not do the pier route - at that point, might as well go precast planks and have a usable space below. I have been part of commercial projects where the parking lots were raised with stacked 'plastic' platforms (similar to septic drain tiles), but those may not be cost prudent for this project.

Be sure you understand the options. There are 2 kinds of crawlspaces allowed by the IRC: Vented and Unvented (aka "sealed"). The terms "unvented" and "sealed" are misleading because this type of crawlspace is not completely sealed or unventilated. The IRC code requires that both of these types of crawlspaces be "ventilated" so that moisture does not collect and encourage the growth of fungus (whether from the ground, condensation on the slab, etc.) by one of the following methods: 1) "Vented" Crawlspace - install vent openings in the exterior wall of the crawlspace 2) "Unvented" Crawlspace - inside the house supply to or exhaust from the crawlspace a small amount of air with a return air path to or from the house and insulate the exterior walls of the crawlspace. Both crawlspaces must have a vapor retarder at ground level and an access opening. For more information see IRC section R408.1, 2, & 3.

Whether you can save by taking some fixtures outside and around slab depends on many different contitions,code in your jursdiction and layout being two at the top of list. If you are in an area away from prying eyes,there are ways of cutting corners. I have installed a buried tank with pump where slope couldn't be maintained around perrimeter of house but few inspectors will allow that eventhough thousands have been approved for use in basements. Roto-rooter has a "pipe busting" method that might save some tunneling,give them a call. One thing I suggest regarding tunneling. They use small chip hammers with spade on tip to dig,insist they use the tool with tamper head as tunnel is filled. Stated another way,get an agreement on how much soil will be left over when tunnels are filled.

Rebar was never specified in the 2-3 car garages in homes I've built. Typically, they were done with 4" 25 mpa slab on 5" gravel with 6"x6" 6/6 wire mesh midway in the slab. 4' depth of 2" washed rock Never heard of that. Four feet!!? "Washed rock" is no spec I've ever seen. What size?? As for the rebar. Considering the size and the lifts, it seems more like a commercial than a residential garage. So if those are the structural engineer's specs, I'd go with them. Yes, all concrete cracks. But building in the relief cuts means it cracks where you want it to and thus looks much better. The relief can be built in. Neater and cleaner than cutting it later. If it's done later, be sure it's no more than a few days.

I'm sure there is an answer out there for my problem! We have a concrete garage with sun room built on top. All windows. We are trying to make it solid 4 season and struggling. Installed a 20 SEER, 21,600 BTU mini split and still chilly when temps in 20's. We are going to try heating/insulating the concrete slab under foot in sunroom. What is the most economical way to keep slab warm? We have boiler with hydronic radiant in basement. Do we rip out garage floor and install hydronic radiant there? Ceiling of the garage? Are electric heat mats under tile or LVT in sunroom better solution?
