Best way to transplant Mayapples?

When I planted these, I had no idea they would get so tall. I planted them in the foreground of a raised shade bed with trilliums and hostas.


I tried digging them last fall to move them further back with taller plants. But it looks like only one made the move, and the rest are right where they originally were!


For some reason, I don't remember what the roots look like.


What's the secret for transplanting these? Thanks!
