Depends on the cultivar. Dark foliage keeps its color better in more sun than shade, ditto the orangey-gold colored ones. Chartreuse or lime colored ones scorch in much sun, even in my very northerly weak sunlight garden. Green leafed ones will grow anywhere.

My apologies for not explaining my situation very concisely. That was a lot to to try and fit in one post. Thank you in advance for patiently reading and advising me. Norma, thanks for the the origin advice. Recently, one gardener told me to give up on semperviums in FL. He said the winters just aren't cold enough and they might last a year or two only. Do you know anyone successfully growing sempervium in FL climates? My sedum was a sedum morganianum which I thought would hold up in heat, but within a month it and all the cuttings were toast. I think that was the first sign of mealy damage. The other plants just endured the assault and hung on until now. I think I can address the mealy issue now that I know how to identify the problem i.e. ants culling small white bugs. Brad, our temps vary during the winter, but we can get a high 20's dip on occasion. I believe on average we're about the same winter temps, but Gainesville snaps to freezing more often. Rainfall looks comparable for our locations as well. I don't have a green house, but I do set up a system covering my benches with freeze cloth under tarps, and a 100 watt shop light underneath when we have a week in the low 30's. I set it up 3 to 5 times last year for periods no longer than a week. Do (or did) you place your cuttings in the shade through the winter? And were they completely dry or just out from under direct rainfall? Would low light indoors be just as good for cuttings in the winter? I have read about your mix on a previous post and have decided that's the best solution. A lot of posts from you and others suggest steering clear of peat. I'm working with equal part Soil Perfector (fired clay), gravel, and fine pine bark. I don't use any potting soil but have considered adding a little "Jungle Mix". Someone told me it was low on peat. It's tough to find good products for succulents in this area. I add a little lime and time released fert as well. I'm not so precise with the particle size but I do sift the fines and dust out. My particle size is 1/8 to 1/4 for small pots and 1/4 to 1/2 for large pots. That's the direction I've been moving in for almost a year. Does that sound like good practice? Or should I be more precise with size? Once more just for clarification: you do suggest I behead the large plants and wait for roots rather than trying to repot them with roots. I sparyed them with Piperonyl butoxide and rinsed off the residual soil. They're drying now. I only used Piperonyl butoxide because it was recommended by a friend and I don't have pets. It's rare occasion I'd use something as severe. Brad one other (off topic) question for you. I'll be in San Francisco from 10/21 -10/31. Other than the SF Botanical Garden, are there some nice succulent collections on display in SF. Even though it's not an official garden collection, I remember seeing some impressive specimens years ago around the public steps while strolling around Twin Peaks. Thank you both for the input. Gardengal, yes I have acidic clay soil and the whole bed is pine needles. Ken, the landscaper recommended and swore they had good luck with pieris in our area ... then ate their words by planting two of them that died and ultimately giving me a free Annabelle hydrangea that I planted myself. But you do see pieris sold regularly at reputable nurseries around here. I had to trim the dead 3-foot stem in the middle as I didn't want to invite disease and it actually spurred new growth. The move probably wasn't advisable, but I went from a 3-foot backrow shrub to an 8-inch shrub that wasn't visible. I don't plan to touch it anymore, I'll let it do it's thing and hope for the best.
