Which Shower Contractor to Use Part 2

3 years ago

First I want to thank everyone who took the time and energy to answer my first question. I now realize I left a number of important details out.

So here I do again::

  1. I have to replace the shower because I am semi disabled and the intensity comes and go. My back is fused from T2 down to my pelvis. Trust me it is a large fusion. I have a number of broken rods and screws in my back. I have been warned by my neurosurgeon, that my back/mobility will only get worse.

2. Leg pain comes and go. First I cannot lift my left leg more than one to one and half inches without holding onto something.. Second, at times I experience EXCRUCIATING leg pain. About a month ago, it took two days for me to become unable to walk at all without using a rollator/put any weight at all on the left leg. Then three days ago, the pain disappeared overnight

3. I live on the fourth floor of a brand new condo building. The current shower is about 36 by 46 inches and has a five inch step up. I am replacing it with a 60X36 shower with a smaller step up. I can install a grab bar on the inside of the shower but due to design issues, cannot install a grab bar on the wall outside the shower.

4. I have been told by the chief engineer is that during construction, the entire bathroom was tiled first and then the tub and shower were installed. I assume that once the tub is removed the floor will be tiled. I have also been told I cannot modify the tub drain or faucet. The most I can do is close it have then closed off by a plumber. The same applies to the shower drain. It is approximately two and a half inches above the concrete subfloor. Its location cannot be moved. The most I can is lower its heights

5. NOTE: I have made contingencies in the event the floor under the tub is damaged/not there. I will repair the area to make it even, and then install a waterproof vinyl designed for bathrooms over the entire floor.

6. I have spoken to numerous companies that claim they are exclusively kitchen and bathroom designers. Their prices range from $62K down to $18K. The $!0K bidder is a general handyman/contractor. I know understand his approach probably not work.

7. All of the other contractors, were going to gut the shower area by removing the the shower floor down to the concrete, removing all of the existing tile that would be covered by the new wall and then install a third wall jutting out from the units wall (three sides of a square.) Both the current shower valve and shower head can be replaced but neither can be relocated to a new location.

8. My wall choices appear to be cultured marble or an acrylic of somekind.

Now to the question:

  1. Given the above

What is the minimum edge step up you would recommend: one inch, two inch?

Grab bars: both vendors have said matching grab bars can be installed into the wall at prefixed locations. Another approach is to use my own grab bars where want them. Which would you recommend.

Seat versus bench: one installer has recommended a built in seat, another a bench. Which would you take?

Any other suggestions are greatly welcomed.
