Any Experience with Kolbe Forgent (Glastra) Windows?
Comments (57)Hi Karen, Turtle code requires lass than 45% visible light transmittance so the Quad 452 (52% VT) is actually a bit over the requirement and would need to be paired up with a tinted glass in order to meet the 45%, but since your concern is SHGC not VT, I am including a chart of the SHGC (among other) numbers for Cardinal coatings. SHGC is the last number on the right... The third column of numbers from the left is the glass visible light transmittance (VLT or VT). VLT is measured as part of an IG unit not just a single coated lite. On the far right are glass-only solar heat gain numbers, whereas window SHGC rating is based on the overall size of the window for computation, not just the glass area. A full window SHGC rating will always be lower than the glass only number because it includes sash and frame performance (which is zero) as well....See MoreHuge price difference when using dark exterior windows than white?
Comments (27)Exterior color coatings are pricey as has been alluded to. This is not a "profit center" to manufacturers or dealers, in fact, some actually take a lower margin on these options to be competitive. As far as how vinyl compares to fg or wood price-wise, again, its not as though there is some crazy upcharge on vinyl window colors. The difference is that fg and wood windows ALL have to have an exterior paint or color coating, where vinyl windows will have a few options with the color extruded as an inherent benefit of the material. Dark colors however, generally are not for some of the reasons mentioned. All that said, any material (vinyl, fg, wood, metal) will have said color options and all are pretty reliable these days due to the advances in the paint/coating technology. I'd simply compare the end price, along with the thermal and structural performance ratings and other options that you desire to evaluate which is best. In short, a fg window could have a 75% upcharge as well over a base color, except its already built in, so be careful about placing too much weight on an upcharge. Lastly, if longevity of product is a big concern, an inorganic material (vinyl, fg, or composite) will be desirable, and good performance ratings are typically good indicators of quality and longevity....See MoreAndersen 100 Series vs Sunrise (Casements)
Comments (48)I just received 8 large 100series Andersen windows to be installed in my sunroom. My builder found one cracked and said the others were cheaply made and he didn’t feel right putting them in as cheaply made as they are. So....... we are sending them back and now I have to wait another 12 weeks or more for another set of windows to be made somewhere else. They DEFINITELY won’t be Andersen windows. Very disappointing!...See MoreOkna Windows vs Andersen and Pella
Comments (55)The quote was provided in Somerset county, NJ. I asked for a price breakdown to door and windows, because patio door is a must and windows could be optional that is why they came up separate. Also any suggestion for a built-mini blind to the Okna Elegante door? Would it degrease the weather efficiency? I didn't find any discussion about the embedded mini blind in the forum....See MoreJJ
