how have you trained Reine de Violette
Comments (22)I have two own-root, one from The Uncommon Rose and one from Chamblees. Both were planted in 2007. My gardens are no-spray. My RdV are not shooting out long canes, but many thin pliable canes, the longest of which is maybe only 5 or 6 feet. Karima, is yours a grafted rose? If so that may explain the huge growth spurt in one season. It really doesn't explain the stout canes though, that doesn't seem to be a characteristic of this rose but I've never seen a grafted version. I have trained some of the longer canes along a 4 foot high fence and temporarily tied the shorter ones to a pyramid that I move around the garden as needed. The young canes are so lax that they'd be in the mud if I let them be and I want to see those beautiful blooms....See MoreReine Victoria and Reine des Violettes bloom time
Comments (15)I think the single, most beautiful display I've ever seen on any rose may have been years ago, on a 'Reine des Violettes" that we pegged, nearly flat to the ground, with just enough arch to prevent the canes' snapping. It was astonishing when it flowered. Hundreds of closely-packed flowers. On the other hand, we've never done it again, because after that flower flush, the structure of the plant was a mess, and we pruned at it for a long time to make it "normal" again. And it was a lot of work to peg it in the first place. Nowadays, we grow it as an untrained, unsupported bush, which easily reaches 6-7' tall by nearly as wide in a season. We do prune it fairly hard, especially for height, in the spring. We get a major bloom flush in the spring, then a few flowers here and there all summer, then another heftier flush in the fall. It then continues with a few flowers through the winter, until we prune, usually late February or early March. Comments (52)Well, yesterday I went to a rose nursery and by their calculations I can fit more roses in my bed by staggering the plantings into two rows. Plus, I fell in love with a few. So I have bought and/or ordered the following: -Duchesse de Brabant (I stopped my car when I saw one while driving and found out what it was, and it was still calling my name when I found it at the nursery; I'll just have to be diligent about keeping her size checked) -Monsieur Tillier -Buff Beauty -Cl. Cramoisi Superieur -Souvenir de la Malmaison -Pink Gruss an Aachen -Belinda's Dream -free rooted rose cuttings of Crepuscule I've put a last-minute request to RU to add Rosette Delizy to my order though I don't know yet if they'll be able to get it to me or not. And I just saw on a different thread that Vintage is offering the apricot climber Mme Jules Gravereaux so that might be added in too. Ah, the joys of enabling! More colors, and roses then I anticipated! But I'm sure I'll be over the moon when they start blooming... And by the way, I believe Soleil d'Or is the notorious baller....See Morealso need help deselecting please
Comments (34)Jasper, my Mme. Joseph Schwartz also didn't bloom last summer for months at a time but this summer, which was one of the hottest on record here, I gave this rose plenty of water and it started to put out new growth and then flowers and hasn't stopped blooming since. It seems to be not so much the heat for this rose but a greater need for water that affects growth and bloom. I was about to discard or give away this rose until I found that I was the cause of the lack of bloom. I'm so glad now that I kept it. Always something to learn....
