How do I keep my dahlia tubers from growing too many sprouts?

I have several dahlia tubers that I've taken a handful of cuttings from this spring. I am not taking more than 4-5 cuttings per tuber in order to still plant the tuber and have it grow into a healthy plant.

My question has to do with limiting the number of sprouts on these tubers. When a cutting is taken, several new sprouts emerge from the spot where the sprout used to be. Some of my tubers with only 2 eyes now have upwards of 8 shoots emerging.

I could cut off all but 1-2 sprouts, but I'm afraid this will lead to even more new shoots and continue to deplete the tubers' energy stores.

I believe it's rather common to take a few cuttings from a desired variety and still go on to plant the tuber instead of disposing of it. I'm wondering how I should go about doing this. Thank you.
