I ended up binding the wing but once that was done she continued to fall over which lead me to believe there is an issue with her leg as well. Yes, it's a her and she is a female Baltimore Oriole. :) Even with her renewed energy, eating like a little pig (wax worms, mealworms, inchworms and fruits of all kinds) and using the bathroom, I was concerned about the extent of her damage and brought her to the New England Wildlife Center in Weymouth, MA. What a fabulous place. If you live near by, stop in for a visit. You can watch them taking care of the animals which are there until they are released back into the wild. Very cool. I have successfully raised baby birds, healed wounds and mended broken wings but I have never dealt with the tipping and leg damage so I thought I would hand her over to the pros. She's going to get x-rays and all kinds of good stuff so she can be treated if that is possible. They will keep me updated and promised to do everything in their power to make her well and release her back into the wild, keeping euthanasia as the absolute last option. I am okay with that. I hate the idea of her stuck in captivity. It's up there with being mauled by my dog quite frankly. I just thought you guys might like an update. I can't thank you enough for all your help. Guess what?!! I hadn't even changed the position of my round whole peanut feeder yet and....this morning I was awoken by a bird call and I thought '....wait a minute...that bird sounds very close by!'....so I get up and peer out to my balcony....and there he was in all his glory! ...a blue jay!....I didn't actually see him with a peanut...he flew away after 30 seconds or so....but I think at this point it's just a matter of time now before they start coming on a more regular basis. It so happens that about a week ago, for my first time ever, I saw three other birds (finches) perched on my balcony for just a second or so, and then they flew off. I suspect the additional plants I've ordered (barberry, forsythia and a japanese maple), plus some hanging hooks and a few tube and suet feeders I ordered, plus the heated bird bath that's also on the way, will bring about my desired goal. ;-)

Oh, yes!!! I've got a Yellow-naped Amazon, Mr. Coqui, and he is the King of the Universe (just ask him, he'll tell you!) He'll also tell you when it's breakfast time, when it's dinner time, when it's time to come out to play, when the coffee machine beeps it's swan song, tell the dogs to stop barking, tell the dogs to stop when they're playing too roughly, etc. He's a riot, and a much loved member of the family, but he does take a lot of work and attention (as do my two dogs and two cats - really, I joke about having to work just to buy pet food and toys and then spend the rest my time feeding and playing with them!) Finches are a good bird to start with if you're interested in birds, because they are very self-sufficient as long as they've got room to fly, nest and amuse themselves. A flight cage is ideal. I've had birds most of my adult life, and highly second the suggestion to find a bird store locally and talk with them - it's not a high income profession, so the people that own bird stores do it for love of the species and have a wealth of knowledge and advice.
