Starting the remodel process
Comments (7)Well, It's nice to hear to that people like Ikea. My biggest reservation with Ikea was that it's the same quality as their furniture. I'm happy to hear people here tell me otherwise. There's one not far from me, and I always do drool over their kitchen designs. LaxSupermon.. That's a great idea about the soffits. I don't think there's anything behind there, only because all the other units in the building have them as well, and many of those units have different structural layouts. I've been looking at the galleries as well, and I've found quite a few that I like. I'm really concerned with making my kitchen look as open as spacious as possible, but I also want to use neutral colors so I'm flexible if I I ever repaint. Because of that, I'll most likely go with white cabinets, or a light shade of maple. The rest of my condo has Armstrong Tiger Maple laminate floors so if I go with a wood grain, I'd like the finish to be similar to that. I'm fine with MDF and a finished surface. I don't need it to be solid wood. Again I'm more concerned with durability/longevity After seeing how well my floors hold up to abuse in comparison to my neighbors real hardwoods, I'm all for engineered/synthetic products. I entertain a lot and I tend to be hard on things, so durability is paramount. Here's a pic of the floors For countertops, I want something that's low maintenance, can be used as a cutting surface, is seamless(no grout or valleys for dirt to collect), is impervious to hot pans, and allows me to use an undermount sink. I'll add another caveat.. My water heater for the entire unit is located underneath my cabinets in the corner behind the dishwasher. I will have to have an access panel on the counter to get to the shutoff valve. In the pictures, you see the outline of the current panel. Whatever countertop I choose will have to address that issue. I actually find granite too heavy looking. I love the look of butcher block, but not the maintenance so that's out. Colorwise, it would again be a light neutral color that contrasts well with white cabinets and appliances. I'll most likely go with glossier cabinets, so I'll want a flat finish on the countertops. I think I'd like to put down grey slate for the floor, so perhaps something in a lighter shade of grey. I've looked at many of the countertop options, and honestly, they all had finishes I'd be very happy with. Considering how small the countertop space is, I didn't really think price would be an issue there. BBSTX... I've also been playing with Google Sketchup, and I think it's quite powerful, (The ability to import detailed appliances was nice) I'm just wrestling with figuring out how to use it. At the moment, I can make a box (my kitchen) but I can't make a box with 5" thick walls. Every time I try to extrude the inner dimensions, it subtracts the space from the outer box. I'll figure it out eventually. :) I briefly played with the Ikea software but quit when it seemed kind of limiting. If I do go Ikea, I'm sure I'll spend some more time in it. Some examples from the gallery I like Thanks for everybody's input! Chris...See MoreEvoke or Paramount laminate floor reviews
Comments (2)Our Evoke flooring looked great when installed 4 years ago. Now, chipped far more than I ever would have imagined. And the chips are very visible, given the surface of the product is darker than the white interior. If you have no pets and never drop anything, and never wear footwear inside MAYBE it'll work for you. But, looking at the chipping, I'm not sure how much of it could have happened even via normal use. Much along the edges of panels, some in the centers. All uniformly sized. Product quality issue, it seems. Save your money for something else....See MoreHas anyone used the new SmartCore Pro vinyl plank flooring?
Comments (55)I have bought and installed $3000.00 worth of smartcore pro 1 year ago in my unheated cabin since it said good for extreme temperatures down to 25 degrees below zero and Lowes said it was the best and only flooring that will work for me. The floor started to seperate in December 2020 at 19 degrees. Lowes said they can not help me and to file a claim with Shaw. Shaw sent an independent inspector to see flooring in March 2021. The so called independant inspector came and pretty much told me that his job is to find things to void the warranty so no claims get paid. He crawled on my floor throughout all rooms with a 6 foot level and found one high spot on my l floor that tilted his level uneven. I told him every house built has a joyce that is a little high or a little low. He agreed and said that he goes through million dollar brand new homes and always finds the same. He measured the space at edges an said some spots were too close to wall. I told him nothing expanded or contracted and its the locking that has failed. He also said the floor molding was touching the floor and that will also void a warranty. I told him there are no houses where the wall molding is not touching the floor and that no one keeps a gap below the molding. He agreed but said even if my floor did have more spacing and wall molding had a gap under it that Shaw would still void my claim since he found a joyce high spot. He left and I never had a returned call since March. I even offered to lift my floor and pay the $1.49 per square foot and to have it reinstalled by anyone of thier choice to prove it was not an installation problem and it is a locking failure problem with the flooring. I am a tipical hard working person that saved for two years to buy the best flooring made for my conditions. Shaw or Lowes have not even called me to offer me a solution or any compensation towards my $3000.00 invested. I do not know if my floor will continue to worsen but I do know it will not get better. I told the inspector that if Shaw really wanted to improve thier product that this was the perfect chance. An unheated cabin that temperatures go down to a couple of degrees below zero in the coldest part of the year. I have 8 rental proerties, a house and 2-cabins that I wanted to do all over with this flooring and now I can not trust Shaw flooring or Shaw customer service to correct the failure. My cousin is a contrator that build homes and works with hundreds of other contracors and said that he will no longer use Shaw flooring after he sees what happened to me. SHAME ON YOU SHAW FOR NOT FIXING YOUR FAILED FLOOR LOCKING PROBLEM. I or my cousin will never buy another Shaw product unless this is fixed by compensation or what I prefer which is to lift and reinstall new flooring by anyone of Shaws choice. The cabin next to me installed a cheap laminate flooring from Pergo at 1/2 the price and it has not failed under the same temperatures. I am out $3000 but you are out hundreds of thousands of dollars when contractors will not trust your products since you chose not to do the right thing.***SHAME ON YOU SHAW FOR NOT FIXING YOUR FAILED FLOOR LOCKING PROBLEM. Comments (29)after reading the warranty I looked on his website and didn't see this floor listed but he said he sells that floor when I wanted to purchase it from him. He is a floor installer but his specialty is hardwood, although he also sells vinyl and installs. I was referred by a designer that I didn't end up using for my project but liked the guy immediately. He seemed very thorough and communicative. He seemed as though he was going to take his time and on his website talks about his "conceirge service" blah blah. he has some good ratings here and yelp, BBB... With so many folks I had to hire I missed it on this one with checking for a license and when I got the bid I noticed he wasn't licensed but neither was the other company I ended up getting the floor sample from and they and other floor companies didn't impress me like he did. He was rather prompt, took time to explain. the owner is not the installer, though. the installer told me he's worked for owner 5 yrs. The detail work looks good accept I was bothered by one white knot after they laid a handful of rows of flooring and told him I'd like a few extras put in closets or under where furniture would be and he chose to mostly not use them at all, cut them out of the planks while telling me he'd still utilize and not waste planks. Owner's wife just had a baby so he was not on the job every other day like he'd normally be, came on the 2d day and it's a 5 day job. they hadn't put down cement yet. Owner told me i was in good hands. good talker, very confident. installer told me they dont' usually do small homes like mine, usually 5k sq ft homes but I think they're usually hardwood. I'm up all night on this one. Got 3 hrs sleep. I can't imagine anyone easily being willing to pull up whole floor. I can't imagine getting a hold of the owner before the worker is ready to start. I'm going to tell the installer to start baseboards in bedrooms and tell him we're still concerned about this problem that he brushed off....See MoreTim Waller
