Growing Bamboo in Raleigh

I've done a little reading on the topic of growing Bamboo, but would like to hear from anyone willing to provide input on the subject -- particularly as it applies to the Raleigh NC area. My 0.25 acre lot is rectangular in shape, extending back further than it's width, and it is the sides of the lot I'm looking to add screening. I like the look of bamboo, it's screening/privacy potential, and that it can grow fast (would like benefits as soon as possible). The runner type seems like a good option except it's invasive. I'm also hoping to have something more on the low maintenance side. Any and all input is welcomed and much appreciated here!

Running bamboos planted along property lines have to be kept from invading neighboring lots. So Plant It and Forget It they are not just for that reason alone. If you have nothing out there now and you want quick results fencing may be your best option. With much of the market for bamboo plants in my region consisting of those whose specific goals mean they should really choose fencing - but don't want to pay for it.

But if they go ahead and install running bamboo instead without investing in adequate containment (and undertaking associated follow up maintenance) then they will be paying for having made that choice also.

There are clumping bamboos that will work in smaller city lots. Don't plant a running bamboo. Serious. Don't do it. Fargesia is the bamboo genus you want to check out at the website listed above. Just don't plant it right on the property line. At least four feet from the line. I am growing it at 4000' elevation near Waynesville, NC. A clumping bamboo given the space it needs is pretty close to no maintenance.

Walmart ....Walmart sells bamboo also 33 types of bamboo thrive in pa cold tolerance above 0 deg lucky bamboo is for indoor slow growing deco plants you can type in lucky bamboo wholesale and order from Walmart Amazon any supplier really as for miss punctuation.....its a message not a letter its written on a 3 inch keyboard with one finger and that finger is twice the size of the buttons just answer her simple question with walmart....if you don't have anything nice to say don't say nothing....no one cares how well you write or speak cuz when your done they all are calling you not so nice things anyway also and furthermore.....set examples for our youth by example only thing you set is bullying negative comments and instilling low self-esteem in a 13 year old child I swear this world is all opinions and selfish behavior without a shred of kindness and love for they nieghber but sence I didn't use punctuation even one time in my speech you will now insult belittle and point out all my flaws instead of just saying........Walmart sells bamboo!!! The poles aren't as strong as you might think (native cane). The plants are very sensitive to the occasional droughts. I had a good stand behind my back yard in a forest and during the drought they died off . Later I found it growing in a low spot that normally floods. Ground water is going to be the key issue and rain runoff ditches are probably the best site for establishing a stand. Still, they spread underground and re-establish where there is adequate and continuous moisture so I have no idea how you would contain them. I don't find them attractive at all. A summertime short visual barrier if there's enough moisture but the rest of the year and in dry periods they do look ratty and the dead,dying leaves do persist. Are you trying to hide a view? As I mentioned, they aren't a permanent barrier. In the riverine (drainage/creek overflow) forest they would pop up in a different location every few years.

Check out the all the bamboo at the Albuquerque Botanic Gardens. No idea which species, but running and clumping well represented in multiple large stands there. The largest is back by the Heritage Farm area, covering many thousands of square feet in area. This stand at least appears to be on it's own, having a naturalized look and being well outside the groomed area of the Gardens. None of these bamboos are like the monsters you see in their native habitat, (Even in more favorable East Coast climates I've never seen anything over 2 inches diameter) but definitely proof that very nice bamboo stands are possible in NM at least.

haha John, I did that too!! did not know the benefit ! I grew it in another bed for fun as it was too hot already for them to make radishes. They did make a ton of leaves...I ate some and then....pulled them out last week. Making the bed ready for something else i can adopt!! Hehe. A couple of Loofah squash seeds that took 2 months to germinate are in that bed and so I think it will use up all space unless I put a trellis. It is slow going this year with the temps and humidity so early in the morning. I just put my tomato stakes and bean trellis. Yes they are still just making vines.. kinda slow.. (In shade). No method is fool proof, but no harm in growing them.. them bugs were there on earth from a very long time... and evolve rapidly to suit the surroundings. They sure know how to survive eh? The marigolds are such care free plants and they do look colorful.. I am sure you will not regret it.. even if the bugs love them. I had read about using radishes as green mulch. Now I know they have another purpose!! Will put them with marigold for Squashes.

I have seen running bamboo planted--the owner said, "Oh, they'll be fine."--now popping up forty feet away in a hayfield. Not good at all.

Pretty much an impossible situation!! Running bamboo cannot spread that far - it just doesn't have the genetic make-up to do so. And since flowering and setting seed is an extremely rare occurrence for any bamboo species, it's unlikely that is the source of its appearance at such a distance.

Most probably a mislabeled runner :-)
