Help with exterior remodel
We plan to refresh the exterior of our house this year. We will be replacing the front door and windows, replacing the brick with stone, as well as painting the whole exterior (currently a mix of stucco and siding). We are open to replacing the wood siding at the front with some style of hardie plank/shingle siding. We would like to stick to grey tones and need some assistance with design ideas. I'd love any suggestions for color schemes as well as where to end the stone (keep it at the same height, make it lower/higher, change the height around the windows, do the whole garage in stone etc.). We are also not quite sure how to do the trim around the windows, particularly the large windows that are quite close together - would we do one large piece of trim that covers the whole area between the windows?
I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to deign choices and we don't have the money in our budget to hire a designer to help. If you've got any ideas I'd love the help!

Since you are going to have to do some re-framing and molding and sheet rock on the inside, why not consider a bay or bow window for the replacement. Granted it will cost more in time and labor than just a window, but it would add some interest to the look of your house. Comments (18)I recommend that you check out what you can do to reveal the brickwork and stonework around your windows and setbacks. I don't know what can be scraped off, but I don't think ornamental shutters will look good on top of them. A fiberglass fabricator could probably embellish the columns in several ways, including providing squared off caps and footings Actually moving them needs to be checked out carefully for structure support, which I presume you know. I still don't favor moving the columns to create a wide opening. In the part of the world where I live (New England) a wide columned portico is almost an iconic logo for a senior living facility, as directional as the MacDonald's arch If it isn't so where you live, don't worry about it. I quite like the idea of creating a balcony, and for that money, I'd make it so I could use it, with double doors leading out to it and safe support underneath. (I think I'd skip the ground level railings and maybe increase the size of the oval window.) But it would be a good investment I think....See More

2 years agoI would remove the skirting where the windows are. Go with a light creamy stone and trim color that match. a dark turquoise undertone color for the siding and cedar for the eaves, garage and front door.

2 years agoSince you plan to replace front windows and door, remove all brick and shutters. Enlarge windows. I love the horizontal windows on the attached photo. Treat front door and little window (?) on the right as a single unit.
