newbie hint #4 -- fall bargain plants
Comments (22)Hey Ken, you never know when you're going to need extra pots! For example, I went through a lot of them this Spring when potting up plants for the Spring swap. Gave away somewhere between 30 and 50 plants (some were seedlings). I have 1.25 acres, but I admit to having slightly rententive tendencies, hehe. AND I have extremely anal neighbors on that side of the house - they don't have a single weed or crabgrass growing on their 1.25 acres - and they no doubt appreciate a neater look! Mindy, the cool season grasses I planted in the fall were Calamagrostis x 'Overdam' and 'El dorado'. I also purchased a couple of Eupatorium 'Chocolate' and as an experiment, planted one and sunk one in the ground in its pot. They all started growing fine this Spring. The Calamagrostis did not get very big this year before it flowered. I imagine it's establishing roots. I may have lucked out though - with the persistent snow cover we had last winter, all of the plants including the pot ghetto were protected from any temperature extremes. Ken - here's a pic of a new garden this year, created using the lasagne method!! (see newbie Hint #2) The "fall bargains" include the Lobelia cardinalis, Eupatorium chocolate, Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah', and Digitalis 'Island Spice'. The Eupatorium maculatum (Joe Pye weed) and others were transplanted from another garden and a few are swap plants....See MoreCan't sleep - I think I may hate my newly finished floors (PICS)
Comments (50)I am in exactly the same place with my red oak floors :( my floors look just as orange as in the pictures... and the variations and wood grain are much more pronounced than I wanted. I have the flooring company coming in on Monday to put down the third coat of poly - do I have any options at this point? Or just a matter of it mattering less once I get more used to the new color...? I had this same level of shock and discomfort with my wall color (had to leave my apartment for the evening just to soothe myself!), but once they sanded the floors - I realized I loved the wall color, just that my old floor finish was clashing with it. Now after staining the floor - I am back to feeling they really clash... and I really wish I had just opted for no stain and a natural finish instead... I’d take that look over what I now have any day. At least - that’s how it feels right now. To the original poster - @lacollar - (or anyone else with a similar experience) - did you eventually get used to (or even fall in love with?! :)) your floors... even though at first it felt like the choice of stain color was a huge mistake? Has anyone tried tinting the final coat to tone down the orange/reds? Does that work? Appreciate any help/advice. Thank you all!...See MoreHints
Comments (8)I never believe this kind of stuff, nothing is that easy. I had ants one day and wiped off the counter where they came in with a bounce sheet and guess what, no ants. They came in the patio door, wiped there and you guessed it no more ants anywhere. I was dumbfounded. BUT 2 weeks later I read in the paper: to stop ants from coming in all you have to do is wash the scent trail away. Yup, a wet rag would have done the same as they bounce. Back to being a non believer. I do use soda for musty doll clothes, put soda and the clothes in a paper bag, shake and leave closed for a couple of weeks, that really really works. I don't keep musty books in my home anywhere. I hate that smell and the smell spreads all through the house....See Moretips tricks and handy hints needed
Comments (44)I am writing to you grandmother to grandmother. I just moved from a 3 BR home with large FR to an apartment. It sounds like you will be living in the place alone. My input is in regard to your safety (I am 70). First the tub and shower: The most common accident elderly people encounter is a fall in the tub. Why not replace the tub with a generous shower with wide door, a grab bar and maybe a bench at the end. Also think about mobility if you ever have to depend on a walker or wheelchair… wide doors and smooth floors throughout. And no throw rugs anywhere. I did what you are describing with my clothes… no dresser for me. Everything is in the closet, including twin hanging hampers that pull out from a shelf. As soon as one is full, I know I should do a load of darks or lights, And for the nightlight idea, I found one at Home Depot for $10. Plugs in any outlet. It's dark in the daylight and bright as you want at night thanks to a dimmer switch. Love it. Electrical outlets don't have to be at ankle height… put them waist high and you won't have to bend over (ugh!) every time you want to plug in anything. For light in the closet you don't need to wire it if you select a battery-powered button light. Paint the inside of all cabinets and closets bright white to reflect as much light as possible. Now about the sofa bed. I bought one that has an air mattress instead of the dreaded mother-in-law bar. Comes with its own electric pump and blows itself up in seconds. Ethan Allen makes it. Not cheap. But because it doubles as the sofa, you don't need a bed, box springs and mattress plus outer bedding -- think economy that way. And for naps you don't need to open it. In fact, it you do something with a sofa bed idea you don't need the separate bedroom. Now you'd truly have a great room and it would feel so spacious. Make a fabric folding screen to add color and when you have visitor it would ensure privacy. And the entertainment center… you can watch TV while you work at the kitchen table if you can angle the TV… maybe an adjustable wall mount would work. For seating if you don't do the sofa bed you may like a chair-and-a-half (or two of them). Extra wide with enough room for a 4-year-old on your lap. It's a perfect grandmother chair. Why not have a big wide sink to accommodate your canning pots instead of twin sinks? Plus you can bathe a baby in a big sink!...See More3katz4me
