How to cover plywood ceiling?

After removing popcorn ceiling, in a remodeled, enclosed carport room, ceiling is plywood and nothing sticks or sticks for very long. What a mess.

Install sheet rock over it or clean all the popcorn residue off, sand the plywood to give it tooth, then prime and paint

Exterior carport, no sheetrock. New plywood then prime and paint.

Oh the fabulousness of what I call schoolhouse paperboard ceilings!!! They were all over my first floor in one form or another thanks to a previous home owner who thought lowering the ceilings would save on heating bills (I'm blaming the infamous Mr.G!) - I've torn out the ones in the Living Room, Dining Room and Library - still have them in the back of the house - kitchen and back entry in a larger format, and my office ceiling looks just like yours. If you have to just patch, look in a closet to see if there's a piece you can cut to patch - but tearing them out and replacing them with drywall is so satisfying! If you can't patch in a tile, your solutions are to cover it, or just fill it with drywall compound similar to patching a hole in drywall - it's not pretty, so it gives you motivation to do it right and tear it out! ;-) Next up for removal in my house is the kitchen/back entry - which also gives us access the very scary wiring between the paperboard ceilings and the original plaster ones 18inches above. That Mr.G - he was a genius at wiring! Just look at the photo of the live wire cutting the corner over the bathtub of our 1950s Bathroom From Hell for proof of that! awesome, thats what i was thinking of doing. Once I secure the screws, use wood filler to smooth it out? What sort of clearance should I leave between the ceiling and vent pipe if any and should I create a rubber collar or something to seal the pipe and cieling gap? I will have to check if my circular saw has a depth/height adjustment. If not I will borrow one. So it would behove me to cut the electrical to my house and run a cord from the garage and use that while the breaker for the house is set off? Just in case I hit a wire? I will try to access the area through my attic and see how that goes and what is around that area. Thanks again!

@partim Two Reasons: 1. Wiremold is intended for surface wiring using individual conductors not sheathed cable. If that's truly BX cable wiring the lights, it likely wouldn't fit inside of a wiremold raceway. Now wiremold could be installed and all the lights rewired with individual conductors but that's an expensive proposition if you don't have the skill and knowledge to do it yourself. 2. I'm guessing that a small businesses like a Yoga Studio is working on a shoestring budget. The foam is cheap and fast and I think worth a try before investing lots of time and money. That's why, in my opinion, comments like add a drop ceiling aren't useful. I'm sure the OP knows that drop ceilings exist and if it were remotely in the budget, that's what they would have installed instead of posting on Houzz. If it's BX, it could also be painted to match the existing ceiling and make it somewhat disappear.

Regulars here know what I'm going to say -- that removing load bearing walls from houses designed by the architect to have them is expensive and complicated. It's not a DIY or handyman project, and requires design help from an experienced structural engineer (still more expense). Open houses and walled houses are designed differently. Removing walls goes against your house's fundamental nature. If you decide that you want an open floor plan house, IMO you're usually better off selling your house designed to have walls, and buying one designed to be open. That said, what's done is done, and I agree that you need to get a structural engineer in there stat. I can tell you from experience that you don't want to just cover the crack pictured. It almost certainly means trouble.

Is this a heated space ? I need pics and more info. What do you mean by enclosed carport room. Is it a living space or a carport. How was the popcorn ceiling there before . ?

You could always install beadboard paneling over the top, and put some strips on the seams. Or tongue and groove beadboard and then not need the strips.

Take it down to the joists, install Hardie Plank and finish in epoxy .

'Enclosed carport room' doesn't tell us enough.

Is this a three season porch (room), heated & cooled space, stand alone/ detached screened room....?

Details matter.

Pat it's called "looking for silver bullets". What people want is not having to put out the effort to describe their project and when they hear project require's work they disappear to go elasewhere and ask. On the electric,appliance repair,hvac forums questions are asked like "how do I,,,,,,,,,,,,",for a project requiring special tools and some experience. When someone tell's them to start by removing cover from breaker box,they ask "where is that located"?

I'm picturing a poorly done conversion from a garage to a bedroom.

I'd take down the plywood to see if it's hiding anything nasty that needs to be fixed before redoing the ceiling properly. There's probably a ton of hidden junction boxes that can't be hidden behind a finished surface.
