Open shelves under an upper cabinet
Comments (19)Wooh we're in the middle of a blizzard! Being trapped inside makes me want to cook. Herbflavor~I originally had wanted everything in drawers, but my kitchen will be around 8'x10' so I was trying to free up as much space as possible to make sure I don't have to store things in the basement or something. I was testing last night on my toaster oven which happens to be be the exact height and depth of the (maybe floating shelves) I would use, and it was perfect for my arms reach. I store my mixing bowls under counter (although not in a drawer), and it's a pain. I use a lot of mixing bowls. Needinfo1~I know my little place will be far from Parade of Homes worthy. It is a very modest little house (960 sq ft), and the little U shaped kitchen will NOT be open to the living room. It will be nice to not have to worry about keeping my kitchen amazingly beautiful so I can really cook. Oh, and did I mention I'm a messy cook. : (...See MoreOpen shelves : open on ends, or closed??
Comments (29)Got cats? I have open shelves above my sink now and some of my cats will climb in the sides and sashay along them. Aside from the eeew factor -where were those cute little fur-paws five minutes ago? - it also is hair-raising as they wend their way through my crockery until I can get a clean snatch on them and yank them off without pulling down a whole stack of plates! I finally got fed up and taped cardboard over the ends to see if that kept them out. It did! So my new open shelves will be closed-ended. I think the thing that makes closed-end shelves look different from cabs with doors yanked off is the absence of any of the residual face frame on intentional closed shelving....See MoreSolid wood or a mix of glass and open shelving for upper cabinets?
Comments (13)We're twins. I'm going through the same thought process myself. First, I found this blogger's thoughts on open shelving to be thorough and helpful: http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2014/12/honest-thoughts-on-open-shelving-in.html Second, here are pictures of my old kitchen (inset cabinets) and old living room (traditional overlay cabinets). Notice that on my white cabinetry, glass cabinets actually were the DARKEST thing in the room, not light and airy like I'd imagined. I stored either bright white or clear things in the kitchen shelves and black electronics in the living room shelves. For this reason I'm considering textured glass, which reflects a lot more light back into the room. (I'm also considering solid wood or wood with the bottom shelf open, but I'll make my own post about that when I start having anxiety attacks about the indecision). I know you can light cabinets, but I want my cabinets to make me smile first thing in the morning, before I've turned on the lights. ;)...See MoreKitchen drawer layout on lower cabinets - need suggestions
Comments (18)@mama goose_gw zn6OH I was not planning on extra cabinets under the seating overhang, just the pony wall for support & for looks. Extra cabinets would be nice but I don't think it would work well with the seating. If I have to choose between comfortable seating or more cabinets under the island, the seating will win for us. The spice idea is neat but I agree that I'm not sure if it would work or not. I will keep it in mind though, for sure! I like the idea of the wider drawers. Suggestions on depths that are best? I like to store things vertically, when possible. It may not always be possible though. And, good idea about framing the panel out by the microwave. lol! @wilson853 Thank you for the suggestions! I'll see about the spice idea if there is any room in the design for it. Good to hear from someone who has the storage idea I had mentioned with the utensil bins. It seems like such a good use of storage because my utensil drawers get very messy fast, within 1 meal after organizing it. So, I though just put it vertically and not worry about it. lol! It should make my ocd self happier. I think....See MoreC C
