Need inspiration to update fireplace

Looking to update a 20+ year old fireplace in my great room without breaking the bank. Thinking about perhaps a light-colored stone surround, going up to the ceiling (I’ve been looking at ideas here but have no idea of what that might cost). The room is really large (24 x 34) with 10’ ceilings, so this just feels lacking. The opposite end of the room has oak built-in wall units on either side of a large window, so I could do a mantle piece to match/coordinate with those. Open to suggestions – thanks!

Before you get your floors redone, I would definitely decide what to do about the red hearth tiles so you won't have to later yank the tiles out of your new floor.
