Since all your light is coming from the sliders, I would put the mirror behind the sofa and the artwork behind the table.

Agree with above. You can also put a pendant in your dining area instead of the ceiling light, that’d add some interest.

Agree with what's been said, however, be aware that you have a lot of rectangular shapes here. You don't want the space to look stale. Change it up with some round and oval shapes on the walls. Even irregular. Look into a local artist, art gallery, or art.com. If art.com, get a print and have it framed (with plexiglass - not glass - for safety and ease of install) locally. Regarding lighting - it's often an afterthought. Lighting has a lot to do with the atmosphere of a space. Best in my opinion is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. Think about color and style. Put in top search box different styles, one at a time. Some to consider: casual, transitional, arts and crafts. Note what you like and don't like in the pictures you see. This will not happen overnight! Allow yourself time to develop a space you love.

Hi Andrew - I am not sure what style you like but your coffee table suggests Scandinavian or Mid Century Modern. Here is an inspiration picture from Houzz. I think something like this would add a lot of interest to your DR area. Check out the light over the table also.

I would put a piece of art where the light hits the dining room wall. A mirror is nice so long as what's reflected in it is too. It doesn't always work out that way.

Art and mirrors yes. But I think lighting is much more important. I’d also consider wallpaper or molding work for the walls

Thanks everyone, some really great suggestions above. It seems like a common suggestion is to hang the mirror over the sofa, instead of the DR. That makes a lot of sense; however, I forgot to mention that cross from the sofa is my TV. Does that change any of the advice knowing that the mirror would likely reflect my television (not exactly my idea of a great view). Can it be positioned such that it does reflect my TV (i.e., a height above where the TV is sitting)?

I would not hang mirror in LR across from TV. I would get some additional lighting in the room. Table lamps would be helpful.

How about showing a pic from the door into the space? Showing all of the space if possible...

How many people do you seat at the table on a regular basis?

Did you pick your area rug yet? I know you were looking in another post. The colors in it would drive what goes on the wall.

I’d mix it up for more interest Vs just using two large items and don’t forget cushions to complement. A hemp rug (IKEA) will add warmth and would define the living room. I’d move the floor lamp to other side so it visually breaks up the rooms.

You could try turning the table, if you want to add more on that wall and eventually add a chandelier.

For framing prints or photos, try Ikea and purchase Bristol board at a craft store. Cut off-centered for a modern look.

Suggest looking at inspiration pictures of combined living room/dining rooms on Pinterest for ideas you are drawn to. Accessorizing is so important in creating a more personal space.

Post some photos showing the other side of the room. For sure add a table lamp. Maybe you can place a mirror in the entryway instead, and use art over the sofa and over the table.

3. Lighting is obviously an issue and one that I'm beginning to think can't be solved by placing a large mirror given the layout of my space. I definitely plan to purchase 1 or more lamps in the short term, and will consider doing something about the overhead lights in the long term.

4. I live alone so its usually just me at the dining room table but it is extendable would be rotated as some suggested above when extended and I'm entertaining up to 5-6 people. Otherwise, I like the current placement of my table because it doesn't crowd out the LR area.

5. As for a mirror near the entry way, which is right in front of my kitchen: I read somewhere that placing mirrors in or near the kitchen isn't recommended; is there any truth to this?

6. Another comment that has me thinking is that I hadn't considered the volume of rectangular shapes I have in space. Any other suggestions on how to address that would be much appreciated (e.g., round mirrors/art work).

to add interest but not break the bank try this. It can be done in one section to separate the spaces or the entire wall. Then of course a mirror or art.

Since it is just you i would minimize the dining area by by touching it against the island lengthwise and only use two or three chairs at the table..this will add just enough new space to spread out and accommodate more tables for the seating..

This will visually increase the size/impression of the kitchen...with the added potential to use the table as a desk....placing a little book case or cabinet in the niche spot... just behind the table...if you do install a new overhead light fixture ...i would choose one that the light is directed downward and is hanging on a chain so placement can be exactly where it works best for your arrangement...if the tv would fit where the keyboard is ...you would have a much larger ...more accommodating...living room area..

Lastly in a space like yours track lighting is ideal...allowing the opportunity to highlight art or wall decor as well as supply ambient lighting for entertaining and watching tv

Consider adding an area rug to define your sitting room and to add some color to your apartment. You will want to add some window treatments for privacy since there is at least one apartment with an unobstructed view into your place. Additional lighting is also necessary. Take some time selecting art for your home.

Being a country girl... i always think plants bring life to a space...hanging plants in each side window and something on the balcony...would screen out a little of the city hardscape...

After seeing all the photos, I would place a mirror above a narrow console table to the left of the entry door. The mirror would reflect the other wall above the dining table more than the kitchen, so that would be fine. Put one large piece of art over the dining table, and artwork behind your sofa - maybe a grouping of three. Add one smaller peice of art between the doors above your keyboard. Get a significantly larger table lamp for your end table next to the sofa.
