My friend forgot what she planted =D

I know what she's going through but I can't place what this could be. Any ideas?

Looks like coneflowers from that angle

Amaranthena: You mention gardening on the Jersey Shore and in Manhattan (on your "My Page") - if it gives you any more confidence, I can tell you that I have several Kerria thriving in the shade of my garden in Monmouth County, near the Jersey Shore. At the co-op building in Manhattan where I used to live (and still care for the gardens), I have another Kerria blooming in the north shade of the building .....and at the house around the corner on Ninth Avenue that I used to own, their is yet another Kerria, thriving on the roof-top in a whiskey barrel, in full sun! Feel free to contact me if you'd like to know places where you can find them in Monmouth and Ocean counties. . .as everyone else has said, "great plant", "easy to care for" ! Carl

The Montauk Daisy has a perfectly white daisy with yellow center that blooms in October. These plants could not be easier to propogate. Break off a few branches in the spring, stick them in the dirt, and walk away. Seriously. They don't want fertilizer and don't need much water either. They are in all the big box stores now, but you don't need to buy that many to have many for years to come. I got handful of branches from a friend last year (who literally snapped them off for me as we walked by), and I didn't believe him that all I had to do was stick them in and nothing else. I continued snapping and sticking them this year, and now I have masses of them blooming all around my property. Cars drive by slowly -- I am not kidding. The foliage makes a good background all summer (although it has an unpleasant smell if you get too close) and the cut flowers last a long time. If you can't find them in the stores, email me and I will send you some starts in the spring.

I found it interesting in that link that it said a common means of introduction is a bit of rhizome coming in on gravel, since it is a common weed in gravel pits. There is a big patch of it on a park nearby - beside a gravel path.... I'd guess that where you saw it was either along a road (gravel base) or where gravel has been used nearby for a base for paving stones or otherwise used in the garden for mulch or making a gravel bed, or something like that....

I thought coneflowers at first, too, but mine are more narrow and more pointy.

And if you are talking about Echinacea their leaves are not paired.

straight down pix are a bit wonky ... give them another week and get us a better pic or two ... and include the dead stalk ... it might help ...

sometimes first leaves out.. arent as big as later ones ....

by which time.. your friend will remember.. lol ...but let us know ...

I agree with Embothrium..my guess is a macrophylla hydrangea..

I'd be inclined to think towards hydrangea as well. That is a pretty beefy, woody stem for most perennials......

Maybe one of the darker flowering reddish heliopsis? Hard to say...

Thanks, everyone! I asked her if she planted a hydrangea last year. She said she has no idea, but she guesses whatever it was, she had to get it in the ground before it froze, because it's planted in an area she usually reserves for herbs. She has a 2-year-old, so I can't say I wonder about her poor memory =) Hell, I've my mukdenia for about 5 years now, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was for the first week after it started coming up.

Ken...we're in the Minnesota River valley, and the soil is pure gardening gold here.
