Dekomon/Sumo mandarin madness
Comments (19)Why, yes, Simon it sure did, yesterday! So, that was 15 days. I can see the teeny first leaves starting to develop: And yes, they most likely come true from seed. They have Ponkan mandarin in their background, which is polyembryoonic. I'm hoping I see another sprout popping up in the next few days. If so, then it's confirmed. If both seedlings look essentially identical, they are probably clones and will be true. If you get seedlings that look different, one could be a clone and the other a hybrid. If you only get one seedling from a polyembryonic variety, well, hard to say until it bears fruit! With monoembryonic seeds, you might get something the same, similar, better or worse. It's kind of a crap shoot with fruit that do not come true and are hybrids. Patty S....See MoreHoneybell Tangelo
Comments (2)Dawgone, Thank-you! I new that is was gib acid but forgot(early onset of alzheimers?) I am going to get a 2footer here in May. I have read that meyer lemon is a good cross pollinator and I hopefully will have one this tommorrow. My parents are in the Palm Beach area. It kills me that there is still a citrus ban in effect. I don't want to give my parents money for one just to have it confiscated at the airport! Last year I brought home a mango tree with no problem. I am going again hopefully around August. I was thinking of trying to find an Oro Blanco grapefruit. If you haven't noticed I am hooked on citrus. Especially the harder to get varieties! I have an order in for a cocktail grapefruit but not sure if I am going to keep it or not. I am thinking that as long as the meyer lemon grows well, and blooms with the meyer, or any of the other citrus, I should be good to go. How large are your Honey bells? My only other issue is how long it will take me to get it to fruiting size. I love these fruits. They are not very cheap here in NY, and I paid $7.00 for 8 fruits but they all were very juicy, sweet but still with a nice tart. I know what you mean about the navels. In my opinion they have a better flavor. I stayed with my friend's family at the time in Scottsdale and there navel was loaded. The fruits were grapefruit size and the best navels I have ever had! I noticed several of the store bought ones were nice looking on the outside but dry and bitter on the inside. I think for now I will stick to honey bells! Could you post pics of yours? Thank you! Comments (24)Me too I'm amazed at the speed these trees are growing. I have no fruit yet but the new growth looks like it has some flower buds in it so hopefully I will get at least one sumo for next year. I have a greenhouse for winter so we'll see how it goes. Your tree looks beautiful by the way. Trace...See MoreHoneybells - White Elephant
Comments (28)For those who don't win here is a promo code (LCNVHR) for a special phone-in offer. I tore it from my local paper last fall. It's a box of Honeybells for $20 or $25 (I don't fully remember). Call 1-800-822-5836. Getting the Honeybells have become a tradition for us. My husband loves them! He likes to carry a couple around and share....See Moreevdesert 9B Indio, CA
