Lots of rain here, too. But I'm still grateful for it, we have been at drought or near-drought conditions for 6 of the past seven years. If it keeps coming down, I won't have much of a garden, but the watertable might finally get replenished. DH's lettuce has been doing just fine in the coldbed, although an invasion of slugs made a lot of leaves disappear. I reminded him to put the coffee grounds around the plants, so the new leaves are now growing perfect. He has a mental glitch about the coffee, applying after a slug attack and then not again until another invasion and another reminder. The peas are starting to bloom. The potatoes are growing faster than I can keep the stems covered. No cabbage, kale, or cauliflower. These normally are grown by DH and this year he didn't start any seeds, and it's been too wet to seed directly. I guess I'll see if any of the local nurseries have cabbage plants. It feels strange to be in the middle of May and most of the garden still looks like winter. It's just been too wet to get it ready for the seedlings.

I scoop up the peas with my arm and gently lift and hold them against the support on one side, then feed the twine around them with the other hand. Whilst holding the twine in place, I then go round to do the next arm full. This is much easier if one person does the scooping/lifting and the other does the twine and tying off. Depending on how many peas you have planted (and yours looks quite densely planted), there is a smaller or larger 'bulge' of peas around the support. They will not grow neatly inside the support and stay inside the support. Also they are nearly as wide at the top as they are at the bottom, so with a support that is teepee shaped, the top vegetation will definitely bulge and not grow inside the teepee. If you squeezed the plants to fit, you would squash them at the top. The only way is to feed the twine around the peas, then fix the twine to the support. Left to their own devices, peas would just sprawl on the ground. Flora's advice to give them sticks as well as teepees certainly helps getting them started upright, rather than sprawling. You could also criss-cross twine diagonally between the legs of the support to coax them into an upright start that way. Good luck

i tried Sugar Sprint this year which is smaller and not as delicious as Super Sugar Snap but is only about 2 or 3 feet tall and stringless. i like to let SSS get really fat before harvest, is it just me or do they seem to get sweeter that way? The pods must be strung at any age but it is so much easier to string a fresh pea. queenofthemountain, did you get to taste any of the Sugar Snaps to compare to Super Sugar Snap? i have heard others say the taste is better? But also what your experience confirms, no resistance to PM. i was suprised to discover that snap peas come in yellow and purple. i know Sylvia grew some Golden Sweet snow peas recently and i just received some Opal Creek and Sugar Magnolia seeds. Anyone else trying any of the colored podded peas?

I planted them all spring and summer last year with great results in pots. They grew vigorously then petered out so you want to stagger the planting to get continuous harvest. They grew to be over 5 ft tall above the pot, and planting quite a few in a 2 1/2 ft tall by 1 1/2 ft wide pot didn't seem to bother them. Planted them in a circle around the outside of the pot about 5 inches apart and then in the middle with the same 5 inch distance from all the others. I had to duct tape 5 ft tomato stakes together to make them long enough to support the tall growth of the plants. I used velcro tape (greatest invention in gardening history imo) to support them. I planted into late summer and harvested into November. I didn't notice that they cared when they were planted in terms of heat and didn't care about the cold until it was really cold. Good luck!
