Do you have a picture of what you’re trying to recreate? I’m having a hard time following you.

Stacking base cabinets won’t work because they don’t have a top. It‘s definitely possible to create, but you’re going to be wasting a lot of pieces.

Off the top of my head, you’ll need:

*the cheapest tall cabinet in the height you want. (You’re using the sides only, so the width doesn’t matter.)

*36” fridge cabinet. This will give you the top and bottom... unless you can’t attach the feet with those, which I can’t remember for sure. If that’s the case, you’ll need a 36” base cabinet for the bottom.

*whatever drawers/shelves you want. You’ll need to drill holes to put 15” shelves in the deeper cabinet, since they are designed for 24” deep.

*You’ll definitely want to permanently affix at least one shelf for stability.

Thanks, JuneKnow, would be open to a stock solution if I could find one. Not crazy about the Rev-a-Shelf contraption. And I have seen a lot of stock cabinets in the right 36-inch size but with not with shorter shelves that would leave room for the racks on the door.

Making shelves shallower seems easy to do in the scheme of the overall project.

Hillside House, thanks! Do you mean the top cabinet above the fridge? I don’t see anything else called a refrigerator cabinet. I think they’re just the top cabinet with side panels? I could use the pieces for the top and bottom. But that still leaves the back of the cabinet?

I would just go to HD/Lowe's and get a 4x8 sheet of white melamine/similar paneling and cut that to fit. I think they come in 1/8" thick - which is thicker than the IKEA panels but would do the trick.

I have long admired those pantries - I think sometimes they are called bat wing pantries - but for them to work they need to be constructed well. The doors need to be strong and stiff enough to handle the weight on them without warping, and they need hinges at the top, bottom, and at least one place in the middle.

For those structural reasons, I would be wary of something cobbled together out of individual cabinets.

IKEA cabinets are all modular. It‘s what makes hacking their cabinets so easy, once you understand how they work.

I did forget to mention above that you will need to do your own back. Just a sheet of 1/4” backer board cut to size (you’ll need to paint it to match) and attached on the back instead of the stock IKEA back.

That’s a good point, Isaac. My plan was to use 2-3 drawers on the bottom so as to limit the size of the doors and also the racks on them. The Sektion comes in 30-inch width, so it seems like it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch to add 6 inches. But that’s why I was wondering whether 3 stacked base cabinets designed to be that wide might be structurally stronger than than the high cabinet made wider. My guess is probably not.

What Hillside House is suggesting would be plenty strong enough. And would be stronger than three cabinets stacked together. And easier to build ultimately. Just have your door maker put enough hinge cups on to support the additional weight of the doors with the storage mounted on them.

@Mets Fan - did you wind up building this? I also really want an English larder type of pantry instead of a typical one found in the U. S. I am so jealous when I see all of the different ones that are available in the U. K. - and even more jealous of the prices!

I am going to ask my contractor if he can build this - but I am trying to get an idea of the easiest/most cost efficient way to accomplish it. With all of the ”pantry porn” I see all over Pinterest, I was hoping to find a U. S. company that is able to ship one at a reasonable cost vs. having one built from scratch - just haven’t found one yet.
