brick exterior darker than expected

What are your thoughts on the brick exterior of our new build? Too dark? We wanted a really light brick to contrast with the black windows, but brick came out much darker than expected. My husband thinks it doesn’t look too terrible, I hate it, it’s a lot darker than I thought it would be. We have already ordered stone (very light brown) to go on the area currently covered in white (around the front door), as well as the skirt.
What color should we paint the front door to lighten up the look? I’m open to ideas.
Not a huge fan on spending money on painting the brick exterior at this time due to the huge expense.

Don't paint the brick. A darker brick with the black windows will not look trendy in 3 years - it will look classic. Try to get a darker stone (if you MUST mix the 2...). A calm darker stone with minimal contrast will serve you well here.

I LIKE the brick and the windows - call this a happy mistake.

Totally agree with the above. Your house looks amazing!! Love the color. And the black. Very timeless. I agree with the above in maybe skipping the stone if it’s not too late...

Hi again, Here is the architect's elevation pic. The one above does not show the cladding material, and I just figured out how to send the architect's picture. This image does not show the window trim that we are planning around the windows on the siding part of house. After playing around with house visualizer sites, I am leaning towards the following body: greige - Quary stone board and batten house trim, soffits, facia, freize board - charcoal roof - charcoal (already done) windows - white (already done) window trim around door and siding windows - charcoal board and batten I think the greige has enough gray in it that pairing it with charcoal (not sure how dark of charcoal to go) should work. I wanted to also let you know that the front door will be changed to a 8 foot double door with 3/4 glass (hopefully this will tie in the deck door better). With the taller front door, the transom above will be shorter. Also there will be a bit more brick over garage than is showing. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Carol

Which I have repeatedly stated that regular house paint is not the best product to use to change the color of brick. 30 years ago there wasn't the range of product to choose from like we have in 2019. Also, from the same article. And, again, to ensure everyone has proper context... "The Brick Industry Association also advises using a porous paint for exterior brick walls, so the brick can breathe." " Zumeta recommends looking into having your brick professionally stained, rather than painted. Although it can be more expensive, a brick stain penetrates the pores of the brick, unlike paint, which simply sits on the surface. It creates new color without some of the long-term risks that come with paint." In addition, the article speaks to the substrate. Which I also mentioned earlier in the thread because it matters. Bottom line is it's not okay to make sweeping, generalizing, fear-mongering comments about the pitfalls of painting brick without specifying product and substrate. The details matter. Lastly, from the article, this is bad advice. Which makes me question the article overall. I wouldn't use Super Paint exterior on normal substrates let alone brick unless the budget was Super tight for painting normal exterior substrates. JMHO: “Choosing a high-quality paint is vital for painting brick successfully,” says Watson. Both Watson and Crocker recommend using specific masonry paint products for painting brick, starting out with a conditioner and a primer, and then using a breathable latex exterior or interior paint, like Sherwin-Williams’ SuperPaint Acrylic Latex."

Why oh why do people insist on taking pictures with the house shaded, then request opinions on color? Take the picture when the sun is at your back and the front of the house is in natural light. And yes to a nice, soft sage green. It’s lovely in a wooded setting, and if the house tends to get mold, it will be much less obvious. Lovely house!

Similar to Emily's suggestion above I would start out with trim colors that are more similar to the hue your brick. You can either match one of the colors in the brick or go a little darker or lighter. This will give your house a consistent look that I feel will most likely subdue the red undertone. Contrasts have a good chance of playing up the red tones in the brick. The raw yellow color of the trim is showing you this right now. Going more gray or cool than the brick will likely do the same thing, playing up rather than playing down the pink undertones. A green might work by theory of complimentary colors, but you would need to try out a few to see what happens.

Your home and brick color is beautiful❣️It looks lovely. Are your doors wood? If they are wood then I would suggest to just stain them for a classic look. Or, for a pop of color, then paint the doors a sage green, or red. DO NOT paint the brick. I like the idea of something lighter in the area you have in white, around your door area, so maybe the light brown stone you ordered may work. Please post a picture once your home is completed.

I think it’s beautiful. And keep in mind how much difference landscaping will make. It’s jarring and stark right now, but won’t be when finished.

Houses while under construction go through a variety of changes including different appearance changes. Combine that with home owner's possible variety of insecurities and the sky begins to fall. I assume this is a tract home with limited number of finishes available and a professional was not engaged in the selection of materials or colors. Even with the poor quality image the color of the brick is fine. You did the best you could with what you had.

I went through the same feelings after our brick went up. Building is a stressful time. Once everything is settled and completed, your home will be even more beautiful.

The brick is beautiful. I would leave that, and I maybe would choose another color for the stone. Light brown, just doesnt look like it would go well with the brick you already have.

Thank you all for the feedback. I will get a better picture today when I drive by the house. In the meantime, here are two pictures of the stone (on a different property ). Still think it won’t work?

Don't use the stone, Brick and stone do not work well together. Brick the rest of the house. Much more classic and will withstand the test of time.

I agree to leave the stone off...if it does not go well with the brick. Perhaps you could use the stone someplace else. A back yard patio surround?

Will your facia and soffit get painted a darker color?

I do think the brick looks good with your windows!! And remember that it takes 30 days for mortar to fully cure and dry. Mortar plays a big part in how your brick looks. A lighter mortar = a lighter brick. Darker mortar makes brick look darker.
