Oh, rob, you have to *know* that the KT is the place to bring all kinds of 'stuff' we don't know what to do with all alone! A problem shared is always a bit lighter. I'm thinking your relative by marriage has an excellent chance of recovery.

BTW, I want to hear 'the big picture' about a concern, the better to recognize it if/when it crops up.

I would be worried but dont base that on previous experiences with ventilators for people with covid. They have learned so much and have completely different protocols and procedures for Covid patients now. I would take heart that the stats on people who are put on ventilation have improved. They are better at protective medications and know more about what really works. Being in a facility that has all the options is really good.

Actually there seems to be more of the antibody treatment available than there are patients requesting it, so I'd check into it certainly if I had covid. The link I provided above says where one can go to get treatment once the disease is confirmed and authorized by a physician.

My daughter has a friend, 26 and pregnant, who was on a ventilator, and I honestly didn’t feel like there was any hope for them. She is now recovering at home (with some serious issues, but improving) and the baby is still in the NICU (and has been for 2 months, her due date is still a month away), but she is improving day by day. So all is not necessarily lost and I hope for the best for your family.

Good thoughts for your DD's friend and baby, Zoe. That is a really tough one when it involves a baby too. I'm glad she is home recovering and no longer on the ventilator.

(So his organs are shutting down . He is so unlikely to live 😭)

What sad news -- prayers for your family.

There is still some hope. One of our neighbors in PA has stage 4 kidney failure plus cancer, he is still kicking after many years. Praying for his recovery. We have some miracles in today’s medicine.

I just saw your most recent post from 4 days ago Rob. Sad to hear of his setback. He has my continued prayers that he can fight his way back.

I try to keep most of it in perspective, so I've been avoiding many updates. This week has big moves.

He has a MRSA-like infection. That alone, would have me worried. That said, they've been tweaking the sedation downward and he was able to use actual words yesterday. They're turning down the ECMO and he's using his lungs more.

Any improvement is good news to me... some hope is better than none. Since I've been able to manage pretty much all my own, and I've only reporting big news, it's either going to be he didn't make it or my next post will be he's out of the hospital. But at least I am now hoping that it can be the second one!

Thank you for the update. It sounds like he's still fighting. We've read of instances where people fought covid and all the complications that came with it for many many days and found their way home and healing again. We'll hope he's one of those stars.

He would not be the first to over come the odds. I will be thinking of you.

Having the kidneys shut down is not unusual in the case of such grave illness, requiring ECMO or other extreme life support measures. They can recover function, too, although it is almost impossible to predict if they will. Being weaned from the ECMO even if slowly is a wonderful step forward!
