Primrose path

Like so many common sayings, this comes from Shakespeare, from Hamlet. Laertes, Ophelia’s brother, has just been giving her a lot of well-intentioned brotherly advice. Ophelia is not impressed. “Do not, as some ungracious pastors do,/Show me the steep and thorny way to heaven,/Whilst, like a puff’d and reckless libertine,/Himself the primrose pathof dalliance treads.”

Geez, Jim, you made me look up the rest of the quote because you didn’t put it all in!

Ophelia:

I have never seen a primrose path, have you? If so, lead me down it! Where I have lived primroses get zapped so fast by spring heat that one would be foolish to plant them.
