The good news is they can fix it when they demo as you have zero waterproofing showing, at the curb, walls or in the niche.

I think everyone is focusing on the dry wall side of the half wall. The question is about the wall tile extending past the half wall by an 1-1/4".

Where the shower wall tile meets the marble top of the half wall.

Those are cement layers on top of other layers and waterproofed.

All of that will leak, because it is not waterproofed. You’re talking a mosquito. We’re talking a cave full of vampire bats. One is far more mission critical than the other.

Cement board, tile, and grout, are not waterproofing materials. Water will pass through them. You need a separate waterproofing layer.

@eirualann, they will never believe you unless you show them in progress photos of your waterproofing!

Are you in CA by any chance, where they use mop and tar waterproofing?

I am in CA and yes it has been hot mopped, papered, etc etc etc etc and then cement on top and YES we know that tile and grout is not waterproof. There is nothing getting through this, I promise!

Boy you guys are tough! Only want to talk about what you want to talk about, geez There is tar paper, wire, several coatings and cement on top, then tile. All has nothing to do with my question.

Half of my reply still stands then, have the contractor tear it out and do it properly or have him tile the wall and put a new wider cap and end piece on the pony wall.

Thank you. The curb and pony wall are already 6" and feel it would be unsafe to increase size to step over into shower. This is only one of two problems and if I don't demo and have it re-done may just trim the inch and a 1/4 off the wall tile. Ugh, what a nightmare.

My original concern and others is when people come with an obvious error in layout we automatically call to question the basics, which is where the waterproofing questions came from. California is typically the only area that still uses hot mop, thus the reason it is automatically assumed the waterproofing details are lacking.

I understand and appreciate your thoroughness in trying to review with limited information. The root of the problem is each sub and project manager did not check the work they were building on. Otherwise could have been prevented. This is why I was afraid to do a project as I am not a contractor and very scary when I know more then they do. In my opinion, the pony wall (that I never wanted in the first place) is out of alignment and therefore everything else is too. On the back of the pony wall, they built the cement out too far and now can't install the tile within the trim, ugh
