Viking: We are putting on 6" pulls for all the 24" cabs (we have only upper cabs) and 8" pulls for the 27 inch drawers (for cutlery and pots and pans). I wondered the same thing as far as what common lengths to use, etc. and finally ended up getting a couple of pulls that we liked in the 6" and 8" lengths and they were perfect! We have a small kitchen so didn't have to deal with different size cabs or drawers.

Ok I found a few move in pics (the kitchen isn't finished, so you see some trim lacking around the baseboards here): The drawers in this picture are 15". I used one pull centered on each. The "standard" braided pull I have is 5" long with a 3 1/2" offset for the screws. You can judge the size of the others with that in mind. The dishwasher pull is actually a sub zero pull that wasn't needed since we didn't do panels on it. It was expensive, but frankly, after using other people's DW pulls (made from their regular cabs) I really appreciate having a hefty pull on the DS. It puts so much less strain on the knob to have big screws on that heavy door. Small knobs on there just don't do it for me. These are 33" wide drawers and 27" wide. On the 33" wide drawers I used two of the five inch pulls on the bottom drawer and one on the top. I did this because this stack of drawers holds pots and pans so I wanted good hefty pulls on them, but the top is a knife and utinsil drawer and I didn't want to have to use two hands to open it when I'm cooking (ok let's be honest...when my husband is cooking...I just watch). The drawer under the sink in the above pic is 33" wide. That steer is the big pull I was talking about, and it's actually fake. The tip out didn't end up fitting with the inset sink :o( and cabinet doors. The center knob on the 33" drawers is about 9" across, so that gives you an idea what a big pull in the center would look like (thats from antler to antler). The rough rule of thumb is that a pull should be approx. 1/3 the width of the drawer. A good trick is to take aluminum foil, shape it into the several sizes of pulls you might be considering, and hold them up against the drawers. Helps a great deal in making this decision. And don't be afraid to use different-sized pulls for different-sized drawers. The pulls do not all have to be the same size.
