February 2021 Week 3
Comments (108)I did manage to go to the grocery store (and as forecast I spent only $20)...didn't need much, was mainly just to get out. As to the false sunflowers, I planted all 20ish seeds and had good germination in November. The good news is they seem to have recovered completely as temps warmed up. Oh yeah, I have japanese primrose (experiment/Plants Delight says it will live here), yellow form of echinacea, and european marsh gladiolus that all have sprouted. No annuals...not starting them till March (started too early last year). Of course that's not far away now..though it feels like it is. I still have in the windowsill (till they go dormant) cyclamen hybrids that germinated Jan 2019. I may have to grow more bulbs...those were fun with constant growth since they germinated (no dormancy). I have lycoris hybrids in media, but no above ground growth (since early Nov), we're (seed producer) not quite sure if I'll see spring foliage or not till fall. But they'll also stay inside for a year after they germinate, before they're big enough to be planted in the garden. Consider that I have about 20 seeds for the price of one semi-mature bulb, and the surprise of what comes from seed, of course the downside of 4 years to see a bloom..lol. All those baby orchids in 2 1/2 inch pot with spagnum moss, that have to be watered about twice a week (and maybe more when heater is running so much as lately). Everything dries out so fast with the heat running so much as the last week. I'm trying to be better about fertilizing (instead of almost never) this year..and things are appreciating frequent weak feeding. I was able to see the plants planted along my south foundation, which is most of my more tender plantings. Most look good, only one looks slightly worrying, but I won't know for till it gets really above freezing (today 33.9...not enough). And even if it does, it's only about a month before it would have died down anyway (fall bulb that has winter foliage..usually gone by end of March). If nothing really got hurt (which would almost be a miracle), I'll stop worrying about how hardy my plants really are. The hybrid snapdragons (supposed to be a short lived reseeding perennial) had 6-10 inch foliage that as of now, looks like it mostly went undamaged at -15F (amazing!), it may have set back bloom a few weeks on the larger growths, but doesn't look like any major damage....See MoreMarch 2021 Week 5/ April week 1
Comments (71)Lynn, you know... I grew up C of C too. As did Rick (HU). I still attend one...and am actually employed by one. It's not accepted by other C of C really because we're not so...C of C'ish. The one I am at is very, very near where you live. (I remember you telling me your general area.) I had a similar experience growing up. Sort of. My parents and people near me were NOT so hardcore with the "we don't know the true date of Christ's birth and it is wrong to celebrate it on a date that is not in the scripture." Of course you're familiar with the whole "speak where the Bible speaks, be silent where the Bible is silent" thing they had going back then. Some still do. My family celebrated these holidays as mostly a fun, family time. However, our C of C celebrates it all now. (I could ramble on about this, but won't. SO much to say.) Rick (HU) is like you. He left that behind a long time ago. I think the difference is my family (and people near me) weren't so strict. Y'all's people were. And that will make thinking people run far away. And...to prove the point that I'm not strict C of C, I'm enjoying a glass of wine RIGHT now. And coming up with an Easter lesson for my littles tomorrow morning. Sorry. That had nothing to do with gardening. I was just checking in....but had to chime in. I'm late to post on the Saturday night, so it's doubtful Lynn will even see this before the next week's thread will be created....See MoreApril 2021 Week 4
Comments (64)Hi Nancy, this is Renee (Mrs. Dollar). I am very impressed with your quilts. You are very talented!. I have been quilting since 2006 and the very first quilt I made was for my parents 50 wedding anniversary. I printed pictures of them and the family, incorporated them within quilt. I have a group of ladies that I quilt with at Lake Texoma twice a year. I have learned a lot from them and just bought a Brother Dream Machine 2 from one of the ladies. I am not part of any quilt guild, but just joined a FB group for my machine. I am quilting my lap and twin size quilts on my embroidery machine. It has been fun. I am currently working on a Hunter's Star king size quilt for our bed and am down to the borders. I have been working on it since June of last year. One of the ladies I quilt with has an AccuQuilt Go cutter and I used it to cut out all of my pieces. Man that was amazing how accurate and quick it was to cut out ALL those pieces. I will have Lynn send you a few pics of my work, but I warn you, they will not live up to your work. I especially like the last one. I think the pattern is called sail's trail? Not sure but I have eyed that one several times. Thank you for your interest and look forward to talking again....See MoreMay 2021, Week 3
Comments (45)Remember what I was just saying yesterday???? Crazy. Well, I had a question early on today, so googled the subject followed by okie dawn. My memory is shot! What was it! Well the main point was that a GW post by okie dawn popped up, and I read her long discussion on it--oh I know--it was on easiest vegetables to grow. But then when I checked in on FB, there, front and center, was the notice that today is her birthday. And so I shed tears. How lucky were all of us who benefitted from her kindness and knowledge. I am so thankful for finding her--and all of you. Oh my gosh. . . as I was thinking of her yesterday and today. . .worked so hard in the house AND in the yard. I wanted the deck and yard to look nice for the trail of people who were going to be passing through tomorrow. Getting the lawn mowed proved to be quite the challenge since it has been rainy all week. Since it runs off our yard except toward the back corners, I found a 3-hr window of slightly windy and no rain yesterday and slammed out the enormous ex-driveway and immediate back yard. GDW took pity and asked if I wanted some help in the immediate, and I said, "PLEASE!" I hardly ever accept his help. But was grateful for it yesterday. Then, we had another break of about 3 hours today! And I told him I thought I could slam out the small front yard. Meanwhile, he was weed-eating. I was thinking about Dawn then, too. She never gave a clue that she was in pain or having trouble. But she HAD to be, I would think. And so thinking about that enabled me to get a lot of work done today. Cleaning bathrooms, finishing cleaning on the deck, vacuuming part of the living room, cleaning out the fridge, mowing the front lawn, doing a couple loads of wash. Then a note from our friends at the marina saying they were going to cancel the poker run tomorrow and move it to June 5. I laughed SOOOOOOO hard! Perfect! Got all our deck and house stuff caught up. We get to clean again a bit the week before June 5, but meanwhile, we get to enjoy how spiffy the deck looks. I have a lot of containers and a lot of BIG containers outside--something like a dozen or so. None are native plants. Several are ornamental peppers and/or lettuce/kale/chard. But though I'd like to have a professional container planter person come do these for me, still doesn't look too bad.. Just got a several more sweet potato slips from SESE that I'll have to get to the school tomorrow (except it's supposed to rain all day), or maybe Sunday. Still have a FEW peppers to plant somewhere. I guess here and at school. Well, love to you all. Later....See Moredbarron
