You people in southern California obviously aren't paying attention. I have posted several times on this forum where to get fluorescent light fixtures and CFLs cheap but apparently no one is reading the posts. Right now Southern California Edison is subsidizing the costs of fluorescent light fixtures so you can get a 4 foot long single tube fixture that can use either a T12 or T8 tube for the ridiculously low price of $1.99. They are also subsidizing the cost of CFLs so you can buy them for an equally ridiculously low price of only 20 cents each, that's cheaper than an incandescent bulb. I bought two cases of them, so I now have a lifetime supply. Someone on Craigslist is selling used T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes in good condition that they got when the redid the lighting system in a large building for only 50 cents each. You have to look at the total cost of your lighting. Why use an expensive light fixture and bulb when two cheap fixtures and cheap bulbs will cost a fraction of the price and emit more light. Think!

My situation is funny: I sprouted different varieties of pepper seeds at the same time. My sweet Banana peppers are almost 5 inches tall, while other varieties (such a tepin) are barely 2 inches tall. I have to keep raising the florescent light, in order to not touch the top of the banana pepper plants. When I do this, the shorter pepper plants are penalized, as the light is further away from them. As a solution, I stack up DVD Jewel Cases under some of the pots, putting them closer to the light. I can't do this with all of the shorter pepper plants, as the Cases are wider than the base of the pots, and I don't have a lot of free space, as my light fixture is only around 4 feet long. I rotate the plants. I'm sorry to hear about your family situation. Here is something that may amuse you: My light has been on 24x7 for almost 1 month. It is an interesting experiment. I'm in my third year of successfully growing chiles, including Bhut Jolokia, which it looks like chillilover is also growing. This year, I keep the room temperature up between 75 and 80. Last year, I had them in my unheated cellar, which was about 64 degrees (in Connecticut). I kept the plants on a 16-18 hour light cycle, with LOTS of lighting. I used a bank of 3 shop lights holding grow bulbs, and lined the white reflectors with aluminum foil. I used a large cardboard box, and made a chamber to close the plants in, and bought a cheap space blanket from WalMart to line the box. This gave me MAXIMUM light, which really helps them grow. One thing that you want to be careful of is not to overwater them. Chiles don't like wet feet. Water your plant when it is dry, not before.
