Kitchens Design Dilemma Flooring

Can these cabinets be saved?

Can I have these painted or re-faced, or do I start from scratch? Also Im going to go modern because the old owners updated the dining/living room floors to a modern glossy grey. What flooring can I transition to in the kitchen? Going with white cabinets.

No is the answer . Those never look good painted the oak trim is a very dated look and honestly were cheap when they were new It looks likr a cool house it deserves a new kitchn and before planning that get some good LED 4000k lighting to replace that flourescent mess . You could do Ikea for probaly less than having those painted and they never look good with DIY painting.All those fan light and any oyher light all needs to be changed .

Glass inserts tend to cost quite a bit and usually require a matching interior as kompy mentioned. If you want\need them stick to plain glass and you can switch it out later with a local glass place (usually much cheaper than what the cabinet company will charge you, same with glass shelves). There are a lot of bins, dividers and inserts you can purchase for less than having them built into the cabinets. You will get a better selection and probably a better price if you purchase the hardware on your own. Pull out trays can be put in after to replace drawers but I agree with kompy they are not as good as drawers for effective storage or ease of use. Replace uppers with open shelves where you can. Keep mouldings to a minimum and avoid extra height or depth (the bigger the cabinet the bigger the cost). Stick with furniture grade particleboard construction. Cabinets don't have a brand carved into them, I would definitely compare what you can get from the higher end lines with what you can get from a good mid-line company like KitchenCraft. If you have to strip it down too nuch to get Wood Mode you may be better off with KitchenCraft (you will have to upgrade the drawers on KitchenCraft for sure).

love those cabinets - especially if they're actual wood :) definately need proper hardware, though - new handles would change the look as much as painting them, really. if you're planning on living in the house forever and ever and passing it on down to your children? bite the bullet, and strip the cabinets, boil the hinges clean, and start fresh. if you're planning on living here for 20 years, and then retiring somewhere when the kids are out of college, and they don't think of this home as their castle? I'd take the doors off, clean up the hinges, sand everything smooth, find nice pulls and such (hinges are hinges, most of the time, and replacing them gets you in to drilling yet more holes in things more often than not) paint the inside something stunning, consider NOT replacing the doors on those lower cabinets (I like open shelves for my serving pieces and everyday dishes) and by that time, you should have a better idea of what specifically you want to do with the kitchen, and can paint them something appropriate - and like Laur said, topcoat the dickens out of them

Researching the same thing but comparing A&R with Plywell at HD. A&R comes assembled, which is a major plus. We are looking for a laundry room, however, not the whole kitchen. I understand everyone’s point about buying quality. We are pretty tapped out (read: over budget!) on our remodel and just looking to save where we can — laundry room cabinets seemed like a good place to do it. Would anyone who has experience with either of these cabinets recommend them for a laundry room?

Thank you. It wasn't even that difficult, but my fingernails were dark gray until I soaked them. I just couldn't believe they were brushed nickel looking under the gold. I didn't even remember they made brushed nickel anything 40 years ago. They could be older than that. The best part is that I was able to use the original long screws. If I had bought new knobs, the 1" screws that came with the new knobs would have been useless to me. I would have spent more money on new screws. I still have three bathrooms to remodel...every nickel saved gets me more money to spend on the bathrooms.

Yes I think we can find the same tile but they are very slick. Maybe the same but in a matte:)

Matte tile can be very slick when wet too. Check the coefficient of friction of whatever you choose.

Seems like a nice space that has had some bad design decisions forced on it! The previous owners must have come of age watching Miami Vice! Lots of mixed design messages with formal moulding, slick tile and mirrors everywhere. My dogs would be barking at the "dogs" in the mirrors!

I think you can clean this up, unify the design and have a very nice home.

Yes it is a great space but all those mirrors! You should see all the 1984 wall paper. I think it’s a gut but very excited to see what we come up with.

Change direction of tile --- a comparable tile could be laid in chevron, etc. in the kitchen...

it can but is not a typical install and a very custom look with a mix of tiles especially next to your grey high gloss but done right could be something special.

one of these would be beautiful if you wanted to go with marble. Either a feathered in transition or a coordinating tile for a straight transition
