A Correction to Julia

Julis, I told you there were no scapes yet, and that was the case day before yesterday. This morning, however following a night of intense rain, Fernstone has a number of scapes that are 6 or 8 inches high. Quite a few iris are budded also, so it appears the season will begin at the end of the month or the beginning of May, depending on how lonlong lit takes for the scapes to mature.

kay - I wondered when you would start seeing scapes. Let's keep our fingers crossed for no late freezes.

Really, Debra! And they are forecasting "lower than normal temps here April 16th to the 22nd. One late frost has already done a number on them. Hopefully they are wrong but we do usual have a "blackberry winter" so it may well happen.

We have no ring issues either. We sanded with increasingly fine papers and have alternated randomly between oil and a beeswax/oil combo shifting to the beeswax/oil combo for good after just 2-3 oilings. I am NOT careful with them. I think you'll be fine rooting it. The law regarding the patented rose only really applies if you are going to be propagating and selling it as a Julia Child rose. While it is technically illegal to propagate cuttings from a patented rose, the law never applies unless you want to sell it. You could take cuttings and plant all you want, and even give them away, as long as you aren't making money off of them. Besides, even if they wanted to enforce the law, who can tell that you've grown them from cuttings, and who will have the time to come and sue you for rooting a few cuttings? I hope that helps!

I usually recommend the RNB over the Platinum, because I feel the griddle on the RNB is better, and the slightly higher BTU doesn't really justify the much higher cost. But neither argument really applies in your situation. So, I think you'll really be happy with your Platinum. The heating element in the oven is a bit of a wild card. It should help with much faster preheating (a problem that he RNB suffers from), but on the other hand it has a bit of a learning curve and might make some specific dishes harder to cook. Since you still have the smaller oven, which I believe doesn't have this type of burner, and you have your wall oven, I believe you have the best of all worlds. Enjoy your new range. It's a beast :-) And yes, do make sure you have proper venting. Also, unless this range is going to be installed in an island, you absolutely have to swap out the backguard for a properly raised version. The ovens are going to fry your backsplash; and if they won't do it, then the burners will. Read the Bluestar instruction with regards to minimum clearance requirements. And no, installing tile on sheetrock isn't what they mean when they say fire resistant. That requires stone or metal on steel studs.

Beautiful rose Diane... i have definitely seen similar shape on some of the fresh opening buds, but the stems are not as dark as yours. the stems do tend to get darker as we appro cooler weather. will keep an eye to compare. my plant is still establishing and was a slow grower so far...previous three years the blooms were not nearly as big as now. this year it suddenly has gone on a visible growth spurt. i guess she was busy working on roots so far. one thing that has not changed is the tendency to bloom repeatedly from May until Frost. best of all, deer tend to leave her alone while they munch on my Mr. Lincoln whenever they get slightest chance. i looked up over web and seems like mine is not an exception. Many photos look similar to what i am seeing in terms of color. just not quite sure what causing this. only time i see hint of yellow is when fallen petals are drying. Julia or not i LOVE her :)

Wow! The lowest night temp here they are predicting thru the 24 is 42 degrees. I hope that sticks. Lower than normal temps, but not bad.

Well, temps predicted thru the 24th had all been in the 40s, but I see a couple in the upper 30s in the next 10 days. No frost or freeze, but I am feeling less optimistic. No scapes on Dumortieri, so not going to be an early spring here. It is usually blooming the last week of April, and has been as early as April 10.

We have had no late frosts in Central Ohio this year. The flowering trees are spectacular and the daylilies are looking healthy as are the hostas.

We have had frost that did in the blooms on our Magnolia . I wonder , this seems to happen every year .......Will I ever live to see the Magnolia bloom and die off naturally ? I doubt it . I thought climate change was making everything warmer . So far we have had 2 killing frosts and snow ( about 3 inches of the damn white stuff just last week ) UGH!!

Oh no, so very sorry. We were supposed to have 3 days in a row las week of frosts/freeze. There was a rather light frost Tuesday, a hard freeze was predicted for Wednesday night. I left very early Thursday to be with my son who had gallbladder surgery. Not quite light then but I could not see frost and really did not feel that cold. Another possible but light frost on Thursday. At any rate, when I got home today everything looked fine. I see a few plants that look a little wild, but nothing mushy. So grateful for that!
