We just bought a house and there is no ceiling lights and it is very dark. We have floor lights to plug-in but it is not enough lighting. Light ideas that do not have to be hardwired

IMO in a living room layered lighting is good, starting with a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. Also task light for wall art if needed. If you get a ceiling light, make sure it is on a dimmer. Nick Lewis on youtube has a lot of great ideas about lighting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1vX-q69zH4&t=7s

Just to add the curtains are down and the carpet is being replace lol.
I was looking to get led lighting or something like that but we have no lights in ceiling or wall, just through outlet. We are getting our electric upgraded. And we are doing repairs for water damage day after we moved in. So looking for ideas that won’t cost a lot

The room is lovely. if you have no where else, i would figure out how to convert one of the cabinets or place the tv on the small wall on the other side of the window from the fish tank. lets see lights and tables. I gave some wood to give some differential in the room. with no art space in the room you need texture color? let me know what you think.

A streamlined modern sconce in front and two in back would fit in with the style of your house. Since you won't get enough illumination from decorative lighting if you center it on the peak, consider installing an overhead light within the peak to light your entryway. Also note the great MCM numerals on this entryway: If you're spiffing up the outside of your house, consider painting the downspouts and portico supports the same color as your front door. At some point, change out the portico supports for some that are more substantial: These supports match the dark siding.

LED lights are hyped but far from ideal for most people, including that many of them flicker and are harsh. You just need a light fixture you like more. You've got hex on the floor. Color and pattern are coming back. All the manufacturers/designers in the home design industry have to be able to keep making money and the only way is to keep telling people their homes are dated and they need to spend money and embrace the next trend! I think your lamps are under scaled for the room, but you might need slightly larger side tables. I don't think I would add sconces, as I prefer to have the space for art, etc.

How big is the room? You can add plug-in wall sconces, available online if not in your local stores. When the electrician is at your house doing the service box upgrade, you can get an estimate for adding an overhead light.

I would do a floor plan or arrange your furniture how you want it and then determine what kind of lighting you want. We have floor outlets about 2/3 of the way from our TV wall so we can "float" our couch in front of TV and have lighting there. It will be worth it to do your electrical so that it meets your needs. If you just use wall outlets, your furniture will all have to be lined up against the walls.

My current rental has no overhead lighting in the living room or any of the bedrooms. The bedrooms have switched outlets. I have switched fixtures hanging on eye hooks in the bedrooms and I just leave those switched on, then use the wall switch to actually turn them on and off. The master has two Ikea pendant lights with nice bright, 4000K bulbs. The kids' rooms have fun plug-in chandeliers. In the living room we have a big plug in lantern pendant, Ikea, 4000K. No switch. Since it goes behind the couch to the outlet, we use a smart plug and turn it on and off with Alexa.

I'll have some tiny hooks in the ceiling to spackle. If I were not renting I would use some paintable cable covers to make the cords a bit neater.

Do searches here on Houzz for “plug-in wall sconces” and “swag chandeliers pendants plug in kits”. You will see types of light fixtures that plug into an ordinary wall socket but which you can easily hang up on the wall or from the ceiling. IKEA also sells a lot of these type of fixtures in expensively.

They will keep things lit until you figure out where exactly you would like to have an electrician wire your ceilings. Never do electrical work yourself. ;)
