Warmly Yours ? for Bill Vincent or anyone who has installed mats
Comments (1)IF I were going to do a mud floor with heat mats, I'd go ahead with the normal tar paper and wire lath base, then I'd lay down some of the dry-pack, lay in the mats, and lay some more dry-pack over the top of the wires, and scread it off, thereby burying the wires and mudding the floor all in one shot. Mudding the floor and then laying the wires on top seems to me to be defeating the purpose. As an alternative, he could also lay down the wires under ALL the mud, but then there would be that much more mortar insulating the heat from reaching the surface....See MoreHas anyone 'installed the cheap stuff' then demo'd?
Comments (12)Seems to me like the less stuff you have to "tear out" prior to replacing it with something you like, the better. For floor tile, if you have a concrete slab, can't you just tell them to skip tiling the floor entirely and just leave you with a bare concrete floor? There are enough concrete floors out there that getting a certificate of occupation with concrete floors shouldn't be a problem. Sure, most people who have concrete floors have them stained and polished but I doubt the city is going to care if YOUR concrete floor are "ugly" when they're inspecting for you CO. Then, when you're ready to put in the good tile that you like, you won't have anything to clean up first. And, if your builder says he won't give you a credit for the tile flooring that he won't be installing, INSIST that he has to deliver the tile that he would have used to you b/c, even tho you have decided against installing it, you HAVE paid for it and you have another use for it. (You can always sell it on Craigslist.) Or, if you're tiling your shower and tub surrounds, offer to let him NOT deliver the floor tile to you in exchange for a credit for the value of those tiles that you can apply to upgraded tiles for the shower and tub surrounds. (You pretty much have to go ahead and tile your showers and tub surrounds and pulling that stuff out and redoing it would be a major expense. Ditto with kitchen backsplashes. Why put in ANY backsplash at all just to have to tear it out later? You can live without a backsplash - I know b/c I still haven't picked something out for my kitchen backsplash even tho we've now been in the house for two years! - and getting the CO shouldn't require you to have one. So, just tell the builder to skip installing a back splash at all and slap a coat of paint on the wall there. That way you don't have to worry that you'll tear up the wall board trying to get the unwanted tile backsplash down....See MoreHas anyone installed subway tiles from Lowes??
Comments (13)Hey Bill, I'm totally flattered, thanks! I had my heart set on the pedestal sink for our tiny bathroom, but knew we'd need more room for our schtuff, even with the ginormous medicine cabinet we built in. I was inspired looking at all the cool niches y'all make over on the John Bridge tiling forum. (It turned out much better than it had a right to, considering it was my first job both remodeling and tiling.) You made my day! :-)...See MoreCan anyone tell me what the tile is used in the backsplash?
Comments (8)Be VERY careful with Carrera marble from any big box stores. One cannot choose ones tiles - they come by the box and it's not unusual for half or more of a box to be tiles that don't match. And no, they cannot be returned! I had very good luck with consistent color with my Carrera marble large subway tiles I bought from https://www.carraratiles.com. They were very easy to work with, knew what color their tiles were coming in (white/more gray) and actually assigned them a dye lot number. Mine came in uniformly white and my tile setter said he never had to even look in the boxes and select a "good one" - he just took them out as they came, they were so even. None of that "order 20% more for color matching" nonsense....See MoreStefanie Moore
