Please help me find an exterior paint colour to go with brick.

We purchased this fixer upper and would like to freshen up the exterior among other things. The house is across the street from the lake, gets very hot in the summer and some snow in the winter. We hope to use the house in the summer months and rent it out the rest of the year.

I would love a white and grey combo paint but the red/orange brick throws me off (I don't want to paint the brick).

The cedars will be trimmed back. The gold sidelites will have to stay for now. I could change the light fixtures.

If those are sliding windows, no need to get new ones. Just take the siders to the local glazer and have the glass replaced assuming it's single pane.

Don't paint the brick. Stain it using the correct product, Romabio.

No such thing as trimming the cedars back. They were planted too close to the house and you'll have to pull them out. They have seen their best days. Plants that are less severe in their shapes would benefit your home style.

Remove the lattice grills from your windows. Not sure how they ever fit into your home design.

Also since your home is more mid century, I'd advise you to replace the wood railing in the front. with something more contemporary like the one on your deck.

I'm in agreement with you that for your situation something of low contrast would be best. You could have the shutters more or less match the house color (or even go ligher, say a cream color) or a soft green with yellow tones to it. I would let the landscaping provide the color (and I'm so hoping you're not doing grass in your tropical environment) and let it be the lush counterpoint to your cool-looking light colored house. I think it would be beautiful.

It is interesting to me. I thought I liked it as is, but the pictures you posted are fabulous lukki. I love the green. I would probably lean towards cream though too. I just find it jarring to have the front so different than the rest of the house. I actually do not like it at all, yet have somehow ended up in that kind of house twice in a row! the one i Have now has brick on the entire front and then White vinyl siding on the other three sides. Why? why? :)

We will for sure repaint the entire house minus the brick. Bought this as a foreclosure a few years ago and have been focused on remodeling the interior till now. We were Originally thinking white - looking at Swiss coffee, China white, ballet white, snowbound - but want to be careful not to go too “white”. Painted some samples today with Bm edgecomb grey and it looks like a contender. Would you say paint very thing white, trim, body, doors, etc? we have some gutter match paint we thought about using in some spots as an accent maybe. Thanks!!

You could select a bit darker roof in gray with gray gutters and consider eventually changing your garage door to something a bit more interesting.

You mention that the summers are hot. You may want to leave the shrubs at the side of the house if they provide cooling shade.

The orange brick is a good, low maintenance material. And while you could stain it, I would not bother. I'd focus on improving the landscaping. If you really must change the colour of your house, changing the white siding to grey will have a much higher impact.

The large cedars were planted too close to the house and should be removed. Consider planting a shade tree closer to the curb-- yes it will take time to grow, but it will be very worth it in the long run. Since you'll be renting the property out, it's important that landscaping be low maintenance. So shrubs, clump forming grasses, daylilies and hosta are good choices. Rhododendrons and azaleas should be happy there and do not often require pruning.

Obviously the trees and landscaping were put in the same year the home was built. Time for their removal and a new plan for 2021! Why would you want gray when you are on a lake? Better to paint it all white, including a custom matched product from Romabio for the brick. Will help it stay cooler in the hot months too. Then add a fun color to the front doors that says, "You're at the lake!" Upgrade the lantern lights to new, more contemporary ones that are at least 1/3 the doors' height, and replace the gold side light windows with clear glass. Agree that railing in front should match what's on the carport. Replace the dated, curvy, brown facia boards with straight ones, and remove the diamond grids from the windows.

--Grilles out of the windows ASAP.

--Pull down the cedars

--Paint siding in brown to match wood siding

--Replace all white railings with reddish cedar railings

--Cedar colored garage door.

--Paint all white trim and eaves dark brick red. I know you don't have a rustic house but an indeterminate modern one, but linking current red brick with trim and cedar will suggest lake feeling and will work. This color combo:

Wow, great replies, thanks so much! Cedars to go! Unfortunately the grilles/lattice in the windows are not removable and we don't have new windows in this year's budget. We can paint, new lights, new railing (new poured concrete steps not visible in photo). The interior needs a lot of work so I need to pick the "must do immediately projects" and "can wait until next year".

Jennifer K, thanks for the landscape suggestions too! I was going to do a whole other post on that lol.
