Please help me visualize this kitchen !
Comments (34)Personally I have found that one large deep table type set up works better for me in prep than a counter only 24". I choose to have a very large island across from the stove for all prep. My island is 34" from the stove. I didn't do this for canning, but I would never want to carry a hot jar with tonges the 48" everyone is always saying isles should be. My DW is right next to my stove and my sink right next to my DW, so short counter on top of DW to land jars on. Honestly my kitchen is too small to be cooling lots of jars, so if it is a big canning week I have planned a special counter in the laundry room (8ft from the stove) that is a "folding laundry table" but is going to be fully heat resistent so I can hold jars there for cooling the full day. I did have a lot of constraints in setting up my kitchen. My house is 300 years old, my water comes in one spot and can't be moved, my ceilings are 6'9" and I can not have upper cabinets because it just feels claustrophobic in here when you do tand the counter is unusable, and I have 5 doors in a small kitchen. My husband's family has owned this property for almost a hundred years and I have seen a few versions of this kitchen, but living in it gutted with moveable furniture for 9 months was the BEST thing I ever did, especially during last summer. I will not be second guessing how we spend any money in this kitchen....See MoreHelp visualizing kitchen with white cabinets?
Comments (30)I have always loved classic white kitchens and have one now, but I don't feel the need to run and paint your cabinets white. I would paint the walls before I painted the cabinets and probably in addition to the cabinets if I were to paint those. The piece behind the stove was a character piece -- something unique that makes your kitchen unlike every cookie cutter one you see, That's not a bad thing. It does look like they took a mirror and just put in a piece of stainless and you may not have liked that, but did you consider replacing the stainless with a tile -- glass, mosaic, subways (not white 3x6 -- something in a different size and/or color)? That darker wood was also the link to the dark crown that helped bridge it to the floors. If you leave it out, I would either tie in something darker (bronze cabinet hardware might do it) or replace the crown with trim that matches the cabinets. Painting them accomplishes the same thing -- it that why you are considering paint? If so, that is a much larger job that leads to a lot of other issues, as Lynn pointed out. I do think that making the island all one level and just replacing the top on it would be the single biggest impact thing you could do to update the kitchen. As it is, it is just a barrier that accomplishes little. You can still see the counters, cooktop and sink. No reason for it. Make it one smooth surface, maybe even a little larger on the overhang, and pull up some stools. Friendlier kitchen. If the child-proofing needs to continue for a while, look at the ones that screw inside the cabinet -- they look better and I think are easier to use. We only put them on cabinets where the kids could get into something harmful -- like cleaning products under the sink or breakable things -- but most of those were in upper cabinets....See MoreHelp choosing kitchen cabinet color around fridge w/two tone cabinets
Comments (46)I like both but do favor the lighter for now. I thought about herringbone but decided on brick lay as you see from my pic. I chose that bc I also picked a tonal tile with 3 shades for texture & interest wo being too busy (see pic) & chose grout to match tile not counter. My tile is 2 1/2” x 5”, Ztile Melange, Green Tea color. Looks gray! My advice to pass along on picking BS is to ”wait until the countertops are installed”! I’m so glad I did. I .read that over & over from Houzz Pros too. I took the advice to heart bc the person at countertop company told me to just wait! I had narrowed my choice down to 2, which it looks like you have done. Once tops were in I did a 180 change on BS tile I’d decided on & went with my second choice. And I was looking at multiple pieces of the 2 tiles to get a better idea. A surprise to me for sure that I changed. All of those whose opinions I’d solicited also seemed amazed at difference in look sitting on top of new counter. And, I solicited opinions from every trades person in my kitchen as well as friends & neighbors! 99% of them changed their pick after counters in too. Reason is that until counter is in, you’re looking at a small sample and a huge vertical slab. Light hits the counter very differently on the horizontal & in your home light. The BS tile as well. So, make sure both of your picks are available on quick turnaround & just wait. BTW, at this point, my pick for you is lighter tile Bc I Like it better with darker cabinets & tile will be right next to cabinet color next to frig. When I look at BS my eye goes down not up so I see base cabs more. Love your counter & cab together....See MoreVisually lighten creamy cabinets - help!
Comments (18)Probably haven’t had enough coffee, but I am having trouble understanding the pics. In one of them, the cabinets look gray. I would like to see several pics of the kitchen, but I see no way that the Carrera marble is going to look good. There is nothing you can apply to the cabinets to alter the color, but you might play around with cooler lighting. While I am not a granite fan, the stone you have appears to be a stunning match. If you dislike it, wait until you can gut the kitchen and sell those gorgeous cabinets. Personally, I would either eat the cost of the marble, try to sell it back to the yard at a discount, or put it on Craig’s List....See MoreAsha Sinojia
