Hass and Fuerte trees

I did research and planted a Hass and a Fuerte about 20 ft apart. The trees flowered and only the Hass produced fruits for the past 3 years. The Fuerte, though full of blossoms, never yielded a single fruit. I was curious and read the labels that came with the trees. The Hass turned out to be a "self pollinating" tree. Have you ever heard of this? I also wonder why the self-pollinating Hass can't pollinate the Fuerte? Thanks for any information that you might have for me. /Hieu

I have read that fuertes are used as pollinators for hass. I also know that fuertes are notorious for odd fruiting behaviors. They won't produce every year, and in some locations rarely produce due to temperatures during flowering. They say that coastal areas of California are not best for fuerte, but rather an inland location is better. I have read that some fuertes go for years without ever producing, but one year, with the climate being weird, they come in with a huge crop. BTW, I just bought a fuerte before reading all those things. I had heard how delicious they are, and also about their cold tolerance, so I chose it for my small yard. I recently bought a Mexicola Grande for cross pollination, more cold tolerance, and interesting fruit, and a very regular producing, high yield factor. If my fuerte never fruits, at least is can cross with my MG.

ok, i finally took a picture and uploaded it here: http://photos.gardenweb.com/garden/galleries/2010/09/can_i_plant_an_avocado_tree_he.html this is where i want to plant the Lamb Hass, in the far right corner of this terraced section behind my house. I would remove the dwarf lime tree that is there and plant the Lamb Hass so it would be 12 feet from the house but only 2 1/2-3 feet from the walls of the terrace. the back wall is very sturdy, the other two are less sturdy. Is this ok to plant here? If not, what about a semi-dwarf citrus or asian guava? thanks, ari ps: is there an easier way of adding an image? i find i have to post it elsewhere than link to it, which is very clunky considering the internet today. Is that black weed cloth under the mulch, ambro? I don't think avocados like that. I would remove it before doing anything else. The shade of the tree and the mulch will eventually prevent weeds from sprouting. It's possible that your baby tree is getting sunscald. Baby avocados need to be protected from our hot summer sun for the first one or two seasons. You can put a large umbrella over it or cover it with shade cloth. That should prevent the brown leaves. Ok I just reread and saw you are in San Antonio lol. I don't know if it is humid there. The FL Hass is supposed to do better with the humidity than the original one. The original one is supposed to have a higher fat content and taste more creamy but the FL is supposed to be comparable in taste. I haven't tried a FL Hass so couldn't say for sure but we used to grow the original one when we lived on the west coast and it is DH's favorite.

The first photo looks like 2 trunks, so I'm thinking you have a seedling tree. You can top work the tree by grafting a good variety on it. There are a few good You Tube videos showing exactly how to do it. I plan to do this with my seedling that isn't as old as yours, but pretty aggressive.
