Entry Lanterns...off-centered or centered w/ off-set front door?
Comments (7)I think that you should only consider sight lines. In your case everyone will be coming in the door and presumably looking dead ahead. you'll get the most bang (since I assume you'll have some fabulous fixture in your entry) if you centre the lights on the door. Also a centred light viewed through the transom windows above a front door is a great warm greeting from the street (if your door is surrounded by glass). I went through the build process recently myself (moved in two months ago) trust me, you can't over think this stuff. There are tiny details all over the place now that I wish I had given more consideration. They don't spoil the experience of my new house, it's not that bad, but they do draw my eye in over and over and over. One of those niggling issues is my dining room light fixture which is centred on the dimensions of the room per plan, but does not account for the fact that the dining room opens to both a hall and my foyer so visual appears much bigger....See Moreoff centered window - what to do?
Comments (7)Thanks. No, I cannot exchange the pole since it is not new but perhaps I can use the long black pole I used on the sliding glass door in a previous house. Thanks. The window is dinky anyway and the view is nothing to look at - the garbage cans and the driveway with my car. So from the outside the window will look the same with the white blinds but from the inside I could have the drapes almost fill the wall. No pictures yet as the room is still filled with boxes, etc. and I still have to paint the walls. I should do a before and after photo shoot because it will be a HUGE transformation. Thanks. Also any inexpensive ideas to hide garbage cans? The space behind the gate is too narrow to ft the cans and still walk by. They are most convenient on the front drive but not attractive. I don't have to worry about HOAs or neighbors since this is not that type of area. The guy across the street has a rooster and there are lots of horses n the neighborhood. A guy was driving a tractor carrying a bale of hay last week. And someone else was riding his horse down the street. It sounds so country yet I am less than a mile from a large grocery store, close to a main road, and not far from 2 freeways. I will start with pictures once I get more settled. Thanks....See MoreHow do I light a off centered 7' island?
Comments (22)I agree with Beth and M.E. Light the island with 1 larger or 3 smaller clear or light toned pendants with a metal finish of your choice to match your theme or hardware, or hood, etc. Center it to the island, so that you can illuminate that work/visiting space. It looks like you can pull off 3, because your island looks larger. I am doing the same thing in my farmhouse kitchen right now. I have a very small island though, so will do only one medium sized pendant, and I have no real focal point in the kitchen, so I am going matte black with it, grey cabinets, white quartz countertops, and antique brass hardware. Good luck!...See MoreVaulted ceiling off-center - what to do with the windows?
Comments (6)Ladies, the wall is built, the plumbing is being run, the electrical is in and there was no other way to lay out the room that I could afford. I had originally wanted to add-on but that would have added $15k minimum to the cost, so it wasn't in the cards for me. I'm trying to finish my home renos before I retire in September - December at the latest - and been working on them for 2 years now. Weeping tile, eaves troughs, new porches and new exterior doors, some window replacements are complete. This, plus replacing the siding / insulation / weather wrap and a couple more windows to replace or add-on to the south side of the house still remain. This house hadn't had any improvements the past 30 years so i got it cheap and I've been saving since I moved here to do them... I'll be broke and living on social security and a pension, but my house will be in good shape and I'll be able to pass it on to my kids, or sell it if I wind up in a rest home. This is a photo of my backyard, facing west... yeah, I want to keep the view. I'm thinking to go with the idea of 3 windows evenly placed across the wall, no longer trying to lay anything out in line with the vaulted ceiling. Thank you so much for your input!...See MoreDenise Reynolds
