I'd opt for a rug that is the length of the couch or a wee bit larger. You don't just want a rug under the coffee table.

In my living and family rooms, my rug is just the length of the couch, however, if I was to post a dilemma on it - folks would say 'you need a larger rug'. I adore my hardwood floors and cannot bring myself to cover them up with a large rug.

Here's a guide to help you along with some ideas and different styles for your review. Something with a lighter base and then pillung in the colors from the open areas and then if you like a certain color for accent you could have that in the rug also.

Here is my suggestion for your room. Turn the dining table to give yourself a bit of room. I hope you will add a chair for a guest in the LR. Place your lamp or a floor lamp next to the window because that is where it is darkest in your room.

Select a light-colored rug for the floor with a pattern to add some interest to the room. You'll likely need at least a 6x9 or 8x10

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful/helpful suggestions, particularly the rug colour/patterns! As well, I do plan to purchase an additional chair and floor lamp for the LR and will position it as suggested!

I have a few follow-up questions, and since some of you have been generous to provide some additional advice on how to use my space, I'd like to expand the conversation somewhat to follow up on those recommendations as well:

1. It seems like the consensus is that a separate rug for the dining set isn't recommended? (works for me since I really like my floors)
2. There also seems to be agreement that the LR rug should be at least large enough that the front legs of my couch are sitting on it; am I also correct in assuming the LR rug shouldn't be large enough that it reaches the rear legs or wall?
3. I've considered rotating the table since it would create more space for the LR area; however, there is a leaf for the table and the room isn't wide enough to fully extend the table. Although I won't often use the leaf and could just as easily rotate the table lengthwise on occasions when I need the extra table space. Given this, would you still recommend rotating the table? Would a decision not to rotate it impact any of your prior area rug suggestions?

Bullet 3- Beverly's suggestion is a good one and although I didn't give it yes your plan of rotating it back when you need the leaf in the table works well. Thus should not impact the other suggestions for the rug for the living area.
