I imagined the mirror on the wall closer to the long wall, not the one closer to the entry. I think the room needs something to open it up, not close it in more, which is what a screen might do, although I think in a much larger room the screen would be a great idea. Here's one from Horchow for a pretty reasonable price (Google "horchow gold leaf floor mirror"). I agree that you should have a sofa, and I like it under the window. I usually prefer that the main seating of a room not face a wide entry door. And I would shop for one in a clean, classic form, that has more of its mass dedicated to seat space than arm space. The Bryant sofa from Ethan Allen is a good example of one that is a good size, a rational price, at home in a traditional setting, and that would look great in a traditional striped or small-scale patterned fabric. Click the link to look at it from the side (the arrows on the picture give you more views). Although your pair of chairs is very pretty, their small scale emphasizes your space constraints. To give the room more ease and life, I would move one of them elsewhere, and use the leather chair in the space to the left of the chest as you face into the room. Using a few larger scale pieces in a small room works much better than fitting in a lot of smaller things. For that reason, I would also rethink the brackets and plates on that wall, and consider replacing them with two slender pin-up wall lamps, possibly tole-painted (with paintable cord covers). This one is an antique, but meant to show you the look I mean: I'd move the lamp that's there now on the round table between the chairs, and use the one now on that table on a sofa-side table in the corner away from the entry. Then I would consider hanging something paler (not smaller) over the chest, like perhaps a large-scale botanical, or an Audubon bird, with a wide cream mat, and hanging the painting as part of a grouping of pictures on the part of the angled wall that's closest to the entry. How much seating do you need on a regular basis? I would be inclined to get a leather couch, that would sit to the left of the fireplace, facing the dining area. Sofa table behind the couch, with lamps. Nesting tables at the fireplace end, to be used as needed. Opposite, on the right side of the fireplace, a pair of chairs that recline. No ottomans, as I see that being an obstacle for your son. The recliners let you put your feet up as desired, but are not in the way the rest of the time. A nice table and lamp between the two chairs. No coffeetable needed. The tv moves to the stairway wall, where the couch is now. Wall mounted or on an entertainment stand. If there is room for the bookcase beside it, fine, but I have a feeling that wonâÂÂt work, in part because I believe I see the thermostat there. In that case, you could put another chair against the wall for extra seating. with a wall-mounted swing arm lamp beside it, and a narrow table next to it. I wouldnâÂÂt necessarily drywall in the space over the fireplace - it could be a cool display niche, especially if you could add some lighting into the top of it.

A recent comment about the doorway being so close to the entry of the room is cause for worry, especially if I have overnight guests. I am leaning towards moving the door to the angle after the foyer area. That area used to open up to the foyer the as a parlor (more for my husband's visitors who were not family or friends). I want separation and privacy. I want the sight lines not to be on the door, especially from the main house. Would it look right to recess the doorway a little on that wall?

I would suggest tilting the chairs so they are facing each other and then shifting them a bit closer to the sofa so one chair is centered on the window and the other chair is directly across the rug from it. Adding a coffee table will finish that conversation area. Assuming no t.v., I would then get an enclosed storage piece of furniture that is taller than either of the two current storage pieces and could accomodate items from both along with artwork hung above, such as possibly the 4 framed pictures that are currently above the sofa hung in a square pattern. Larger art would work better above the sofa.
