Design Dilemma living room

Fresh living room layout ideas?

Our living room doesn't have a lot of options to move things around. We have two layouts we go with, our summer layout and our winter layout. We'd like to see if there are ideas for new ways to change things up. One possibility is wall mounting the TV on the north wall and giving the people on the couches a way to see it as well. Thank you

The opening at the bottom is a doorway to the kitchen. The opening to the far left goes to the hallway. There is a computer desk I forgot to add that goes in the very bottom right by the kitchen opening.

It appears you have 3 separate pieces. A larger couch, a love seat and a chaise. Is this correct? If so, I would use summer TV location. Put love seat across from couch on south side. Put chaise centered between them facing TV. You could pull everything down toward shelf area a little.

I like your winter layout. I don't think you would gain anything by mounting the tv on the north wall, as you would be facing a blank wall, away from the windows, and blocking more windows with furniture. Your summer arrangement really closes off the space. Do you have some photos that show how high your windows are off the floor?

I don't have any pics at the moment, but do have measurements. Windows are 12in from top to ceiling and 18in from floor to sill. Couch cushions are 16in from floor, and couch back is 32in from floor.

I agree more photos would be helpful or a sketch of the room with dimensions. It doesn't have to be a fancy CAD drawing, just a sketch with numbers. How much wall space is there to the right of the window shown in the pic? Could the tv go in that corner? What other furniture is in the room? How does the room relate to the rooms around it? Is that pass through space behind the sectional?

Agree with lynartist get someone knowledgeable in to look at the walls. Shifting the color used makes a huge difference. I would not have the walls smoothed or made shiny. But there are all sorts of ways to approach this and end up with a great looking home. Consider moving the functions of the two spaces. A modern dining area with a fireplace, even such an ornate one, could be spectacular and marry well with a more intimate USED space for conversations, drinks, and even just solo book readin'! Making the switch would also de-emphasize the fireplace and allow it to look its very best. A bit of a paradox but look at many old European houses and you'll see it again and again. My other preference would be to have a wood refinisher take down the shine on the floor. Congratulations and I hope you let us know how this progresses.

New house and no idea how to lay out my living room furniture or decorate these tall bland walls. Disclaimer: pictures are 3D generated. Assume all things in living room are movable (except TV/fireplace). 3D furniture pieces are more for a “style reference” Purpose of the post: Any suggestions as far as retailers with this style furniture, color schemes you’d incorporate, advice on literally everything, decor/furniture whatever! I want to know what YOU would do with this space if it were urs. My house is an open layout (pic attached) 12 foot ceilings in the kitchen/living/dining area, 9ft everywhere else. My current living room furniture is handed down from family. I’m getting rid of all of it. The pieces are large and bulky for the space. It really closes in the room and I think the space has potential to feel larger. The corner fireplace is seriously throwing me off my game. As far as furniture preferences go: I promised the husband a recliner. I personally would like my own chair as well. Here’s the kicker, we want them in front of the tv… I want to be able to seat as many people as possible, and I STRONGLY dislike a sectional. “Well kid ya shoulda thought about that when you designed the floor plan” yeahhhhh I didn’t think about that. Style/colors: Obvi I like black and white. I LOVE CONTRAST I also love shades of red I have grey and chrome incorporated all over the place. I honestly don’t know what my design style is, I think it dabbles towards glam contemporary but it’s not all the way over there. I have a cat and plan to have children in the near future so do with that info what you will. Backstory: me (25F) and my husband (26M) are both engineers and we designed this house from the ground up with no outside help. We’re super proud of it and it’s our personalities in a nutshell.

With windows that low, stick with the winter plan, but pull the sectional away from the windows about 12-18". That should still give you enough room near your doorway to the kitchen. The computer table can sit flat against the long wall, or in the corner with all the windows, or incorporate it into the shelving area on your hallway wall.

It's 3 separate pieces. We don't mind trying out new layouts or mounting something like the TV. I added an actual picture of the living room. Also, I've just noticed the two cushion has no side arm rests, contrary to what I have in the drawing.

An ideal arrangement would be the tv placed on the short wall like your winter arrangement, with the sectional on the long wall across from it, and replacing the sofa with an armchair to use on one end of the sectional. The two large pieces just don't work well in this space.

How often is the winter seating arrangement full of people? Personally, I would get rid of the armless piece and re-stuff the cushions on the 3-seat armed piece. Use it and the chaise. Float the 3 seater facing TV and angle the chaise right or left of the TV, depending on whether or not there is a mechanism that needs to be hidden once it is separated from the 2-seater..
