Use gimbals along a wall that you want to accent. In the "field" of the Living area you will not ever adjust them, and if you did where exactly would you be focusing the throw and now you'd be looking into the light from many angles. If you have a re-configurable space set up a general grid of downlights, not gimbals.

The space is surrounded by windows and then open space, so nothing to highlight on the wall.

We do have a record player on a low mantal by the fireplace with storage for records and the stereo underneath. So I could see getting some extra light there being useful. But maybe we just install some cabinet lighting.

Other than that, It would just be to highlight a space on the couch or arm chairs to avoid shadows and make reading easier. Since it's an open floor plan, we can't run power to a table lamp on that side.

Seems like what you all are saying is the set up of fixed overhead down lights should provide enough lighting in the main space where we shouldn't be concerned with shadows, and if we did rotate or adjust gimbal lights to a highlight a spot we run the risk of having that light angle being directed into someone's eye in another. That's why they're best pointed towards a wall, where no one is ever facing the lighting source.

Thanks for the reminder about these lights being a full fixture replacement. I'll pick up an extra to do the replacement if needed.

What are people's take on slightly regressed vs. flat disc lights. Are the regressed lighting effect worth it?

I am having outlets installed in my floor so that I can have lighting where needed.

Then you can have the layered lighting that is really the best lighting plan.

Concrete floors makes it difficult to do that in our place.

Gimbles on areas that could be highlighted ie: walls with art, fireplace. Usually, parameter areas than in a central area where you are trying to light a whole area do the flush mounts.
