Flooring Kitchens Design Dilemma

Trying to decide what flooring to go with that will match the honey oak cabinets in our kitchen and bathrooms. I’d like the option of floors that will look good if we decide to paint the cabinets down the road. I’m going to keep the black granite and was planning on doing a vanilla cream subway tile with a very light grout. Change hardware and add some fun modern lighting. As well as installing some glass panel into a few of the cabinets. I will also be painting the entire house white dove by Benjamin Moore.

Does the white oak flooring sound like it would match or no? Lots of opinions are saying a medium tone flooring but we have 2 dogs and 2 kids and they are a nightmare to clean.

In LVP, white oak, tends to quite a bit of gray. Not with honey oak, my dear. Make your paint decision now. Don't pick a back splash yet either. Post photos of the kitchen as it is now.

What is the flooring in the REST of the house? A kitchen is not "isolated" in the house. .......and it is a;ll tile?

I posted your kitchen.......What's the door? A corner pantry? I'd be rid of that, before ANY change in flooring. It's choking the fridge, and there are many options for pantry storage

NO to black grout..........please no. The tiniest imperfection in an install is magnified, and it is BUSY.

Yes, children and dogs can be a nightmare to clean ;)

But to your question, I'll ask a question: what are the floors in the rest of the house? Your cabinets are really quite a nice style and color. Personally I would not use LVP anywhere in my house, except maybe the basement. If you have hardwood floors in the rest of the house, I'd continue them into the kitchen and have them site-finished and stained a bit lighter or darker than the cabinets.

What I would not do is a bright white tile backsplash, rather an off-white or cream-colored tile. In the kitchens shown above, the dark counter tops are all honed and more subdued than your polished granite. Personally I'd see if you can have it honed, or replace it as well. But that's just me, I've never been a fan of too much shine.

If you don't want a hardwood floor, then a dark tile, such as a slate-look would be beautiful with your cabinets.

First things first: make sure you can PURCHASE more of the Pergo. And then, just for fun, make sure this is the Pergo that is water RESISTANT. If it is NOT, then do not run this in the kitchen. And if you have it in a FULL bath (shower/tub) then I recommend you look at a different floor - in the next 5 years. So, now that you have established it IS the water resistant Pergo AND you can STILL PURCHASE the product, you can decide if the colour clash with your cabinets will be worth it. Traditionally grey toned wood (like the Pergo) does NOT look very happy with orange toned wood (like oak cabinets finished in an oil based finish commonly referred to as "honey oak"). This clash can be reduced by working with a DARK GRAY counter top (a counter that is SPECIFICALLY chosen to match the Pergo). So....that brings us the the next question: what is your counter top? And then we move to "When do you want to renovate the kitchen?" If you have a kitchen renovation in your future (next 7 years or less) then you will want to hold off on any further decisions. When looking at new kitchen flooring, people find out very quickly how much they want a new kitchen. And by the time they get to renovating the kitchen, they either have to rip out the flooring (because they are changing the foot print) or they feel STUCK with a floor colour that dictates their colour scheme...and thereby feel cheated in someway because their floor doesn't let them chose the kitchen of their dreams. Whew. So much to be decided. All for a floor that probably won't work with the current cabinets/counters. Of course I could be wrong...especially if you have a stunning gray soap stone counter top. That would look STUNNING with the Pergo. But first, photos of what exists...just to be sure.

Oh dear. Another "Can't find more of the vinyl floor to finish my house" thread. For this reason, I prefer the 'stone' or 'tile' look of vinyl in a kitchen. That way a wood-look product can be added to the living spaces at a later date and NOTHING will look amiss. But now the wood-look stuff is in the kitchen AND there is no match in the living area. If you want more vinyl, then you will have to work with another 'look'. Like stone or tile. But wait. That looks bass akwards! Stone in the living areas and wood in the kitchen? Sigh. Now the painful part of partial renovations comes into focus. If you want something other than carpet, you will have to stay away from 'wood look' if you want to have your home look nice. You have very, very few choices. If you want continuous flooring throughout the house: 1. Remove the kitchen floor and start again = refinish the entire house in a single floor finish If you want the CHEAPEST option: 2. Replace the carpet with more carpet If you want a NICE finish but do NOT want more wood look: 3. Cork floating flooring (natural cork will match both the oak trim AND the kitchen flooring) 4. Sheet linoleum in some colour you like (it will look like a children's daycare...) If you want SOMETHING other than carpet and don't care about the look of two woods: 5. More vinyl or laminate in a wood-look 6. Vinyl or laminate in a STONE OR TILE look (it looks REALLY WACKY...but totally doable) I'm sorry you had to find this out the hard way. You have essentially painted yourself into a design corner by using wood look vinyl in the kitchen. As for painting the oak finishes (that's a lot of stripping + painting) I would figure out the FLOORING decision WELL BEFORE you figure out the wood features.

That home’s bones are really great. Avoid the new homeowner temptation to put a personal stamp on it. The home itself should tell you what suits it. In 6-12 months. Frankly, there is very little I’d change. The almost MCM vibe is it’s strength. It’s what should be celebrated and enhanced, not tried to erase. I’d never paint those original cabinets. I’d look at other cool heritage MCM homes for inspiration to keep the wood slab cabinets. And the brick. And all the rest. It’s all cooler by far that the boring 2020 paint it all white trend that is already over.

I’m not a fan of shine either but replacing the granite is just not in our budget right now. The rest of the house has a million types of flooring. The original owners started puttting down vinyl and then stopped. The kitchen and dining are tile.

Start with a plan! You have 5-7 years of renovations ahead of you. You have not picked your can colour. You have not picked your countertop. The back splash is in the air. So far you have the appliances and wall colour.

Out of 7 elements in a kitchen, you have nailed down 2 out of seven. Are you updating your lighting?

If you continue without a plan, you will repeat the mistakes of the previous owner. Please take two weeks to sit down and make a plan. You will pick the COLOURS your house will wear when you at finished. Draw it out and colour it in....That's what pencil crayons are for. Make copies.

Find paint chips that represent your colours and keep them with the copy sitting in your car! Yes. Leave a copy in the car. That way you don't buy something just because it is on sale.

Time is plentiful and cheap right now. It is free. Take the time to make your renovation plan. It will be the single most important budget-saving project you will undertake.
