I found some pictures of the current house on another PC. I also noticed I linked a Compact Fluorescent version of a Progress Step light but mine are incandescent. I run 25 Watt bulbs in mine so they don't run up the electric bill too bad. The LEDs are probably pretty nice but I didn't see anything like that when I was building. Since these are during construction pictures they'll help you see how high we placed them. These ones, like the ones in the old house, light the stairs perfectly.

Just wanted to know if anyone has used LED post light. Aurua makes one that goes on the post and looks like a post cap with lights on the bottom.I liked the look of them because they are small. Has anyone used it and what is your opinion. We are not really looking to light up the deck with these lights, we have lights on the house that already do that. These were just going to go on the far side of the deck for a little ambiance. Also we are looking to put some lights on the steps. There is a small LED light that is fairly reasonable in price and we were thinking of using it on the side of the steps and have the light go across the step (steps are 38in wide). Would that work and would we need one for every step. Any thoughts and opinions about this subject would greatly help. Thanks Martina

Hey Barn, inside or outside? Is there a reason lights like that are preferable to adequate staircase lighting? everdebz's mention of aging in place reminded me that my elderly grandmother had difficulty with treads and risers when they were all the same color, because she couldn't see the edge. If the goal is to make it easier to manage stairs when you're older, one thing to consider is a contrasting strip along the edge of each tread. This can be built-in or added after the fact.

@Lindsey, while you have left out many specifics which could affect the final design / layout for lighting (IE: materials, colors, ceiling height, etc.) I would point you to using something like Lithonia’s LED Wafer or Philips SlimSurface LED lights instead of old style / typical recessed lights. Typical recessed can lead to long-term moisture / mold troubles when used in a roof structure, which will not happen with Lithonia or Philips items. Also, use dimmers so you can adjust the light differently depending on need, no matter what quantity you ultimately choose to install. Good luck with your renovations.
