I am commandeering a small shallow closet in a room that will become the library and converting it to a bar area with a wine cooler, shelves, lighting, coffee machine, alcohol, stem wear and the fancy coffe cups etc. I have seen several that are mirror backed- it's a great look... but how does one install glass shelves then? Sorry this might be such a stupid question. I need help with the steps so I don't drive my husband crazy with a poor plan. It's wired for light and has outlets but other than that it's just a one shelf closet right now.

Yes 12x12 Should hold their clothes for a few years. However when they get to be teenagers they will probably be too small for jeans, but still fit t's and sweaters and pj's. If you are not sure, measure a pile of the folded things you want to put on them. Measuring would also give you an idea of just how much they would hold

If it's any comfort, the same thing happened to me when my better half stepped on a bottom shelf like this to reach one of the higher ones. I found the annoyance factor to be much greater than the effort involved in fixing it. I agree that there are studs in your wall, and you don't even need a studfinder: just get a stiff piece of wire and probe sideways through those convenient holes in the wall, then measure the sideways distance so you can transfer the measurement to the front of the wall. Once you find one stud, the next one is likely to be placed 16" away. It looks like the shelf was overloaded -- or stepped on? -- but that's not an excuse for the original installer to not have set the brackets so they could be screwed into the studs. Based on your original post, I am guessing that you have next to no handyman skills. If you think it is beyond your abilities to fix this as explained above, any friend with pretty minimal skills should be able to remount the shelf correctly in about an hour. Patching is fairly simple, but requires a couple of steps, with time in between for the joint compound to dry. If you want more specific instructions, ask here. If I lived nearby, I'd fix it for you for $100. Run away from whoever gave you a $3000 quote. I know Hawaii can be expensive, but the person who gave you that quote probably has a second job robbing banks.

If not for the glass door, I would recommend hanging the broom and swiffer on the back of the door. As it is, you have the make sure your shelves are not full depth (at least not on both sides) to allow room for handles. Rather than plan the space first, it might be better to flesh out exactly what will go in there. Plastic tubs are great for craft supplies and even food, but of course cereal boxes take up more space than cans of soup. That's why evaluating the usage comes first. I'm thinking about things like Legos, board games, jigsaw puzzles - because the shelves are wider than the door, you'll have to pull something out of the middle to remove things from the sides of a shelf. In my new kitchen, I put extra shelves in several upper cabinets, to minimize stacking. I'm pleased with the result! You have a beautiful space!
