Forgot to water my crape myrtle!
Comments (2)I would not expect the root system of the rather warm natured Crape myrtles to survive in temperatures like that. But why not be patient and see if any of the branches begin to bud? You'll need more than a gallon of water to insure that the whole root system can experience moisture, after being allowed to get bone dry....See Morepruning my 3mth old crape myrtle
Comments (5)I've seen them braided and they look kind of neat when they get larger. I don't think it will be shrubby later on. Think more vase shaped with several trunks. You can prune them up later on as they grow so you have a canopy effect. I've seen where people will plant them every 6 or 8 feet and then prune them up so they mend together above so they provide a wide natural shade. Whatever you decide, PLEASE do not train them as a single trunk and then prune off all the branches every spring. Crape Murder, people call it. They'll survive it, but they don't thrive....See Morepruning crape myrtles after a spring frost
Comments (3)You'd probably have lovely blooms anyway, because it's hard to kill them. I know that since I began my obsessive collecting, I've read and tried different advice. To be fair, it might differ a bit per zone, but I don't know. Mine have absolutely been prolific since I followed the advice to prune when dormant. They also put out fewer suckers trying to make up for the missing piece, so there is less "spidering" of the limbed area. What type did you buy, which has nothing to do with the pruning? It's just that they've leafed out so early, it's very interesting. None of my 32 varieties have begun to do so and some I don't expect to start until the end of May! Comments (7)I very much like that tall one! I cut off a couple of suckers the other day, I don't want it to be super crazy with lots of trunks, but I want to be able to shape it how I want as it grows so if I only kept the main I would have been limited. I am not surewhatt variety I have, it came from arbor day society a couple of yrs ago and was in a not good spot so growth was slow, but their site might name the variety, I'll have to search. I would love it to be small to medium tree, but I'll take what I can get!...See MoreRelated Professionals
