I've had 2 pullout faucets in the last 20 years. Haven't had a leak yet. Many of them have stainless hoses. And besides, the water coming through the hose is after the valve so you're not going to have spontaneous leaking from a damaged or failing hose since the water only flows through it when you turn on the faucet.

While I cannot speak for all pull out faucet, we have had a Grohe pull out faucet for nine years now. It has a stainless hose, and has never leaked. We have been very happy with it.

I have a Nantucket Brass pull out with stainless hose no leaking

We have 3 pull out hoses, 1 stainless (Grohe) and 2 nylon. None of them have leaked in the 10+ years of daily use.

Never had one leak and honestly over the years have had some cheap pullouts

Much prefer a pulldown faucet, to a pullout. Pulldowns are more ergonomic. And, with a pulldown, you don’t have to hold down the spray button to use it. The spray button will lock, for hands free operation...very convenient when washing veggies and chicken. Pulldowns also have greater reach, and a variety of sprays.

We love our Kohler Artifacts, now over 5 years old. It has three different sprays, one of which is a berry spray, which I use most of the time. Kohler has a lifetime warranty, and will replace parts, or even a new faucet, if anything malfunctions...free of charge.

To put your mind at ease, install water leak sensors under the sink for the faucet, under the dishwasher, and at the refrigerator, which will automatically turn off the water when a leak occurs. We also have an alarm to alert us of any leak.

I have two 15 year old Kohler Vinnata pulldown faucets in my kitchen (which is the predecessor to the Artifacts) and the hoses have never leaked the faucet has never dripped. Now, parts have worn out, and Kohler sent replacements for free. We are a family of nine so our prep and main sinks get used heavily. Pull-OUT faucets are so unwieldy. We have leak alarms under our sinks that look like cute frogs. Just remember to check the batteries!

Not necessarily. Many of the high arc pull-down faucets have short spout reaches - meaning they are closer to the back of the sink rather than reaching farther toward the center of the sink. A faucet with a short spout reach means you have to lean farther into the sink to rinse things, and even an inch or two will make a difference in the strain on your back. Of course different people have different tolerances for this. But often when we see people complain of back pain at the sink, it turns out that their high arc pull-down faucet has a short reach. Pull-out faucets have longer reaches, and so are easier on the back.

That function has nothing to do with whether the faucet is a pull-down or pull-out style. There are many pull-out faucets that don’t need the button to be held down to stay on the spray mode.

If you mean the length of the hose and the ability to get into all corners of the sink, the pull-out faucets also have long hoses and the ability to get into all corners of the sink. As mentioned, the spout reach is longer with a pull-out faucet.

I think there may be a confusion of terminology regarding what is a pull-down vs a pull-out faucet.

@mmiller, the pulldown faucets I’ve tested, and the Kohler Artifacts which I have, have a very long reach. The arc and head rest above the center of the sink. There’s no “leaning in” to reach it. I have no idea what you’re talking about. The manufacturers make up for the height, by adding some inches to the hose. And, the neck of the faucet swivels to move the water stream out of the way, when keeping the water on. You sound like you’ve never actually used a pulldown faucet.

The depth of the sinks that are in use today, is most often what causes back pain. The two inch difference between the old 8” sinks, and the 10” sinks that are prevalent today...the extra reach to the bottom...is the issue. For me, getting a sink grid for the bottom, really helped.

No hose leaks from either my old Kohler pull-down or the Delta I have now. (Kohler had a different issue and the company wouldn't honor the warranty because it wasn't transferrable -- that's cr*p customer service and really put me off Kohler, for the kitchen anyway). I also have an el-cheapo big box special something-or-other the plumber put in the utility sink in the basement, and no leaks with that either. So yea -- in the grand scheme of things, not something that needs to take up space on the concerned list.

I'd recommend a pulldown over a pullout any day. Most pulldowns are more flexible, in terms of where they can spray without a lot of wrist twisting, than most pullouts.

Over the past 15 years, I've had two pullouts and five pulldowns (over the course of one move, one remodel, and some extra faucets I got as a product reviewer). None have leaked. You won't regret having a flexible sprayer in your faucet and one less hole (no separate sprayer) in your counter. Make that decision and move on to what type of spray pattern you want :).

Do not confuse the spout reach with how far a hose pulls out from the faucet stem. The spout reach is the distance from the center of the spout base horizontally out to the water stream. I posted a diagram above, but here is another. Spout reach is an important spec. Websites like build dot com that sell faucets have spout reach as a sortable spec because it is important for a number of reasons. Some pull-down faucets have spout reaches of 7”, while others, like the Kohler Artifacts, can be 9”, and that makes a difference in comfort.

A pull-out faucet by its design will have a longer spout reach than a pull-down faucet (see my pics above). The spout reach indeed has an ergonomic effect on some people’s back comfort. Please don’t dismiss something out of hand just because you are unaware of it.

Shame on you for perpetuating the myth that brand name faucets are better quality when purchased at a plumbing supply house. There has never been a single shred of evidence to support this theory. None.

Which of the following sound more believable please?

Tuesday at the Moen plant: "Okay boys, put away all the brass parts and get out the plastic, we're makin' faucets for the big boxes today."

Or:

Home Depot CEO to Moen CEO: "Ima buy 258 rail cars full of faucets from you next year. What's our price please?"

Regarding Jan's and Joseph's comments - as long as the model numbers are identical, the faucet is identical in every way, regardless if you bought at a big box store or at a plumbing supply store. You will sometimes find different model numbers - different by one letter or one number - that may be made differently, but just be on the lookout for that.

The advantage of the plumbing supply store is that they may (may) help you with purchasing the correct ancillary parts and tools that might be needed if you are doing DIY. Home Depot employee will only be able to help you if you are lucky enough to get one of the older guys who are retired contractors who work there because they were bored in retirement and/or wanted some extra money.

And the manufacturer's warranty on faucets with identical model numbers is the same regardless of where you buy them.

My new one is both pull down and spring neck. It's FANTASTIC!!!! I've never had leaks from faucets when installed properly.
