Tall, hardy, free-standing shrub suggestions Pls?
Comments (38)Ratdogheads - in answer to your question, I could have sworn my HOE was own root, but it was actually grafted from Jackson & Perkins about 9 years ago. I strongly suspect it has gone own root since I no longer see a graft and I didn't know to bury it in those days. I wouldn't hesitate to plant it own root. I love the changeable color and style of the blooms, all of which I think would complement Darcy Bussell nicely. In this relatively dark bloom, there are hints of the crimson-purple DB shows: She can tend toward an orange-apricot color in cool temperatures, as she was here this May: Most of the time she's a blush color with nice cupped but open blooms like this: To give you an idea of relative size, here is HOE mixed in with other large shrubs in my zone 4 pocket of part shade. The shot is a little bleached out, but HOE is the palest rose mostly in the center of the shot. You can see my 5' black fence behind it and it is already up to the fence in an average year by June as seen here: Bottom line - it's a lovely survivor for me. Comments (22)If you have several other very fragrant roses, are you sure it will matter if you sneak in one or two that aren't? I'm not a "fragrance fiend" (lol) myself,so I don't really know how those of you who care a lot about fragrance feel, but to me fragrance can be very elusive. Some years, for example, Paul's Himalayan Musk perfumes the entire area during it's all-too-brief blooming period, but last spring I didn't notice much of anything. Other roses seem to be fragrant only during certain times of the day,or lose their fragrance once cut, etc, etc, etc. Also. to me at least, there's the "too much of a good thing" factor. After wallowing in the inebriating perfume of ,say, Mme. Isaac Pereire and others like it, I truly treasure the light,citrus-y scent of Harlekin (HMF calls its' scent "strong wild rose",whatever that means. To me, it's very light, fresh, and lemony; I wouldn't use the word "strong".) There is such a thing as over-kill! And note that Nik specified "to my nose".Sensory perceptions can and do differ so much from person to person, so for all of these reasons personally I'd advise you to just be happy that you finally snagged an Ascot. After all,if in the long run you decide you don't like it, your plan DOES admit the possibility of making eliminations......See MoreDark Desire vs. The Prince
Comments (11)Vavporvac - I would love to see your Barcelona pics! I looked it up on HMF and it's beautiful, but very red? Thank you! Nanadoll - Big Purple does look magenta, but it is a gorgeous rose! Thank you! It's very hard with pictures to capture the actual color of red/purple/pink roses. Unless someone says this rose is true to the color of the photo. The other consideration is my garden is about 50 feet from the house so I am inclined to use bolder colors just to be able to see it. The pastel pinks, while beautiful, have to be used sparingly only to be viewed while in the garden, otherwise they just look white from the house. Thank you both for your suggestions!...See MoreEmily Bronte - A unique rose worth looking out for
Comments (78)The first year, mine only bloomed once, but grew straight up and very healthy. It wants to be tall, but unlike many Austins, it does not need to be staked. No flopping, just grows straight up. Then, in its second year, I moved it to a NE exposure from a SW exposure, to a cooler, wetter, shadier part of the garden, where it had more space but soil definitely quite hard. And I got 4 flushes last summer, with a final small one rather late in the fall. Definite spacing between flushes, and it is not a continuous bloomer (so far). When the temps got up to the mid-high 90s, which is unusual for here, the buds were duds, shrivelled and died. So I don't think it likes extreme heat. Mine is on laxa (Western Europe). The first flush in early spring was the most impressive. However, the scent is so very lovely, that I now have a second one. Would be great for a hedge....See MoreAaron Rosarian Zone 5b
