Comments (4)IME, sooty mold does not flake off easily. It needs to be washed off. It is harmless on its own but if a heavy covering - like above - it can prevent the plant from photosynthesizing properly. Often products used to treat the insect problem causing the development of the mold - insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils - will help to loosen the mold as well, but spraying with a solution of soapy water (regular dishsoap is fine) and then hosing down with just plain water will be most effective....See MoreWhat's This Stinky Tar Stuff Oozing From Birch Log?
Comments (3)As sugars and cellulosic compounds (cellulose is actually a complex type of sugar) decay, they go through many intermediate stages, turning first into this, then into that, as the decay organisms do their work. Surely nothing out of the ordinary here. Any dead object will ooze lots of strange materials as decomposition proceeds. And sugary stuff-like the sap that was captured in this chunk of wood when it was cut from the tree-quickly turn dark upon oxidation. That's probably all this is. Like fall leaves when piled up quickly turn black-the sugars held in the leaves are the first compounds to undergo chemical and biological breakdown. This is called carmelization and is utterly commonplace throughout nature....See MoreOak tree oozing black stuff

Many here would be surprised at how many of the large old trees seen in the landscape are in fact hollow or partially so. This is not "weird" or unusual, but is completely normal occurrence....See MoreChuck C
