Brick foursquare exterior refresh ideas
My husband and I are considering purchasing this old brick foursquare built in 1900. (It's been on the market for over 100 days, as it needs a lot of interior work). My goal from this forum is to get ideas for an EXTERIOR refresh on this old beauty. I like the brick, but I just think there's too much of it - especially given that the porch railings and columns are all the same brick. We're considering a creamier off-white trim that doesn't look as stark as this current bright white does, and possibly wrapping the columns with a wood, craftsman-inspired look. I think the roof would benefit from some new mission-inspired roof tiles (possibly in green, or a green-black hue). I'd like to refresh the look of the windows, but am unsure how to achieve this. Aside from obvious landscaping, what other ideas might you have for refreshing this tired exterior? If we buy it, I want it to make me happy every time I drive home and see it!

Comments (12)Yes, all shutters off. Whatever siding color you pick, paint both doors the same color. (A different style door would work better than the Victorian one) I vote for same siding color for all of it, a color that works well with your gray roof since a lot of it shows, although Emmeren's photo is an interesting way to handle the two finishes of the siding.. Since you're just moving in, landscaping is the last thing you're probably thinking about. But this house could look amazing with much deeper beds with taller plants in back, perennials, bushes, hardscaping, and more. When you come up for air, and if you have some budget left, a small garden center can help you come up with the plan. Good luck. It's a pretty house. Cream and gray. Add bright blue doors (replace Victorian door) (This post is a good example for people who want to paint their brick--next owners may not like painted brick, or they wish it were unpainted. I'm usually pro-brick because it adds texture to a façade and can work well with very modern colors--navy, black, charcoal. I usually suggest a brick walkway to enhance the brick and link it to beautiful landscaping. My main concern is the brick “knee wall” that is connected to the garage, which covers our front patio. My wife seems to like it, but I feel that it hides the house and it needs a little “something” to add more curb appeal. Comments (8)I'm not a structural engineer, but the two tall skinny posts holding up the second-story deck landing look precarious to me. I would have an engineer check that. Replacing the wooden balusters with something that's not wood will decrease your exterior maintenance. I like the idea of glass but that is not exactly maintenance-free either. A cable system might look good, and the horizontal wires would echo the horizontal siding and brick. Nice house!...See More

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoIt's a beautiful home that hasn't been destroyed by updating. I would take some time to read up on how to do this correctly and wrapping anything in wood when you have brick I would think would be a nono. I agree the white seems stark and should likely be toned down.
The roof is going to be expensive if it needs replacing, but I love the color and style of the roofing materials and would incorporate that color in the trim somehow. See this image below where they carried the roof color into the trim to add some impact.
Looks as though the windows have been replaced with a style that is not appropriate to this home design. The old windows would have had muntins in the upper panes.
